Fuel Econ for N52
Hey got a question, I have 11 328i xdrive auto. I am not sure if this is normal but iam avg 17 mpg (this is about 90% city). I thought this was close to normal but its getting pretty much the same as my M. The plugs were changed in jan and I use shell 91 gas. Whats everyone else getting ? I feel that this isnt good mileage, is there any thing i should look at to improve mileage?
FYI Tires have been swapped to summers not much improvement No CEL. |

That sounds like fairly standard mileage. The only thing you can do to improve it is work on driving habits if you haven't already. City driving sucks man! At one point my n51 got 16mpg. |

Thanks for the input guys.....Damn guess its coming down to driving habits! or upgrade to the 4 banger turbo version which gets pretty good mileage whenever we get the loaners/rentals.

I've gotten 560 miles on a tank and then less than 350. It really depends on how you drive. If you ease the throttle and let it shift below 2,000 you'll see good numbers.
But 17-18 city is good for xdrive. I wouldn't worry |

Mine is exactly the same in the city, range from 12-14mpg. Highway cruising (>200miles trip) avg at 25.5 mpg. I have an n51 2008 auto. I wished I could get 17 in the city lol

That's normal, because these cars weigh 3600+ lbs, are automatic, fulltime AWD (RWD at highway speeds), and I-6. It's all about the types of roads you drive. Expect 14-17 mpg if you're in a dense city area with signal lights every block like NYC or Chicago. 18-20 mpg for more sprawling suburbs, 21+ mpg if more highway, etc. I've noticed these cars suck a lot of fuel at idle and driving at low speeds in the city, while constant speed (steady state) driving is actually fuel efficient, even at 80 mph. In fact, I achieved 32.xx mpg during a 30 mile drive which was 90% freeway at 75 mph, coming from a car that does 17 mpg in the city.
You can keep your tires inflated up to 90% of the max psi stated on the sidewall for a slight improvement in fuel economy. Lighter wheels also are effective in reducing weight, which might help city figures. Last edited by cuts_off_prius; 04-24-2017 at 01:48 PM.. |

Yup on the highway I get about 25-27. I texted my buddy whos a bmw tech to see if he can run a test on my AFR; saw some ppl on the forums posting results so figured theres a test that can be ran in order to determine that my levels are normal.

My 2007 X3si with the three stage manifold gets 20mpg in the city. Did quite a few maintenance repairs a few weeks ago: new valve cover (the old one was warped), new plugs, new air filter, oil, OFHG, exp tank & plate.
Maybe the air filter is not up to snuff? I see you changed the plugs. My daughter (she's driving it) uses Shell Vpower (91 as well).

Stop commenting! There is absolutely no way you can back up this statement.
OP, 17mpg in the city with Xdrive is very normal as confirmed by everyone else that posted in this thread And the manufacturers estimation of mileage with these cars as new from the factory. You should also know that str8-Sux has zero experience. He's basically the worst troll around here. Listening to him will be a waste of your time. He tells everyone their cars are broken and in some cases recommends engine rebuilds when there are very cheap and easy problems to the actual problems. It's super weird. |

I routinely get 13-14 in the a very hilly area with short drives. 12mpg is not out of the range of possibilities. |

i find that fuel economy does not change going 100KM/H vs 140, because at 140 you are closer to 2500rpm where most of the torque lays so not much more throttle position is required to maintain that speed. I suspect that a 3 stage manifold should slighly improve efficiency because there is a big jump in torque below 4500rpm. |
