How about to buy a second basic e9x cluster and out source the left/speedo movable stuff? Stepper motor and the ring would fit and act the same, you would just have to paint/sticker the ring to mimic the M3 bezel/ring...?

Yup totally doable this way too. Venoxy.com also sells the sticker for the tach redline ring now so this should be easy.

Do they? I didn't see it on their website. I had some made locally.

Yup. They haven't added it to the website but if you email them I'm sure they'll sell them now. I tested them a month ago, and have one in my 328i to replace the stock M3 one.

Any one tried to do this with another non-m3 cluster swaping left side motor to right?

It would function exactly the same as if he took the right side motor out from an M3 cluster. The only difference is the graphic

I had a fully retrofitted m3 cluster in my old n54 worked fine, used perk toolkit to mod the rpm gauge as it use to settle at like 8k.. and i wanted it to be at 6.5k like the 335i is stock

on my new 335d i have got custom 200mph dials with an m look made, so decided to do it this way around, as it seems be popular now, plus i dont need to send it off.
So i removed my old m3 cluster before i sold the 335, and this time i harvest it for the needle, rpm motor, moving gauges and m3 rings.

Guess what! variable temp gauge seems to be fucked on 335d
and also good job i tested OIL TEMP GAGUE SETTING before i ordered my custom dials.
as i wanted to put oil temp gauge and not mpg. but 335d dose not seem to read oil temp gauge, and it always sets it to 80c hot or cold, carly also confirmed it cant read oil temp

so basically! all 335d UK owners can do is copy the style, and 200mph gauge!

variable rpm will be fucked, just acts odd or wont move.
and u cant code in oil temp.

if anyone else can have ago would be grateful could just be the motor with an LCI cluster messing around, as the test drive function for the warm up rpm seems to control the rpm gauge randomly, same numbers will never give the same results on my lci cluster.
4000 rmp could line up to 5k, then il put in 7000 and it will go to 3k then il change it back to 4000 and it will go 6k (so strange but not sure if i used the test drive function on my 335i with the real m3 cluster or not "could be a software bug")

sorry for any typos i have dyslexia :/

And what about M3 shift lights?
Is it possible to connect LEDs and to have it in non M3 cluster? (could be different location)

At that point you might as well get an M3 cluster and swap the gauge faces

Well I am more interested how it works and if anyone has done this, and is it possible to do on non-M3 cluster, I would move LEDs maybe to other place.
I prefer non-M3 cluster.

Great write up, will definitely be doing this.

Does this actually limit the engines revs following the variable limiter, or does it just work as a guide?

I’m guessing to have the engine follow this clock mod you would need more coding/tuning to suit the actual mod done?

This is just a guide so that you do not go over the recommended RPMs during cold running temps. Once the engine is warmed up, it will move to the normal Redline.

I thought so, still a good mod IMO.

Is the DME capable of tuning the redline to be at 4K until it reaches either required water/oil temps and then returning to the standard redline or is that a standalone ECU requirement ? Not that it should really be needed but just curious as to whether it is capable or not for it to really put the cherry on the cake..

Nope. The LEDs function via a signal from the DME for the revs. The sheer amount of work and investigation involved to piggyback this signal would be ridiculous.

This.

There's no way to restrict the RPM vs throttle pedal input on these cars

Not sure if this helps but many E60s (like mine) have the adjustable redline for warm up(just black/white marks vs the yellow red). MIGHT be the same mechanical parts and easier to source out.

Great idea. The rotating redline plate should be cross compatible. They are the same across E6x and E9x clusters.

Interesting, are they on all E6X models?

Mine is a 530xi wagon so Id say at least 530 and bigger motors. 528/525 more than likely but some digging should turn that up.

IIRC it raises to around 6K for start up depending how cold it is outside and how long the car has been off. I'll make a note next time I drive

Edit: It looks like this is only a feature for Pre-Lci models (04-07)
