[6MT N54]. 232k miles, just developed a very odd “tapping/knocking” noise…
To those who may stumble upon this in the future, check your pulleys. My issue ended up being the power steering pump pulley was all over the place. I am picking my car up today 3/1/24, and am going to purchase and install a new PSP
Hello. I am not referring to rod knock, but a knocking noise was the best way for me to describe it. Someone did also suggest an exhaust leak. But I’m not too sure. Clutch began to occasionally slip in 5th and 6th gear at full throttle around February 2023. The car is almost exclusively a highway cruiser for me and doesn’t really get driven much outside of that. I work from home, so it is not driven daily. Sept 2023 began to hear a similar noise at cold idle. Went away after maybe 500 miles. Dec 2023 began to hear the noise at idle. Began making the noise on cold start when taking off in 1st gear. Jan 2024 noise ceased completely. A week ago, noise began to be semi constant. Engine hot, cold, etc. I didn’t notice until I was 30 minutes from my house when I pulled up next to a car at the grocery store and heard the noise. I assumed it was the car next to me, until I turned mine off. Absolutely zero drivability issues, no odd codes. Noise is consistent to engine speed, not vehicle speed. The noise seems to cease around 25mph or so. Sub 25mph, The noise also cuts in and out. Sometimes for 5 seconds, sometimes for a minute or two. Sometimes when turning the steering wheel the noise will cease temporarily, then come back. So it is not a constant noise. Other things I’ve noticed is it is NOT an engine noise, or coming from the turbos. And just to be safe, I checked the oil filter, which looks perfect as well. I was suggested on Reddit a few things. Just wanted to see if this may nail it down any further. My main concern is wondering if it is temporarily safe to drive, and if a clutch and flywheel kit from FCP would correct this. Specifically, the one that with clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing with shift fork, and pilot bearing. I’ve attached the video below. I’m not filming through the engine bay because the N54 noise makes it difficult to hear. But it is absolutely coming from the firewall area and down low as you can tell, by when I raise the camera back up the sound is almost completely gone.
