Vanos Code Question

`A few weeks back I got the 2A82 and 3100 codes, so I ordered new Gates vanos solenoids from Rock Auto. In the meantime I cleaned out the current ones along with the filter. The codes still came back. Then I installed the news ones and cleared the codes. Now after some cruising this morning I'm getting the same damn icodes again. So if the code didn't change with new solenoids would that mean it's a cam ledge issue? Would a log show faulty solenoids? Any input is greatly appreciated.

could be bad ledges check the oil filter cage too. If you want a quick fix try other mhd version maps. Some require less vanos movement than others. When I was stock turbo v10 would always give me vanos codes. Single turbo and 30k kms later on a custom tune 0 codes

Funny you mention the oil filter cage. I checked mine and I see no defects in it. I replaced the o-rings with every oil change. Is there a specific failure point in the cage that I need to look for? I'm going to try v9 maps to see if that eliminates the light. The only issue is when I clear it, it sometimes takes weeks before it comes back. So it makes trouble shooting very difficult. lol

I've checked everything except the tune. That's the last step before I do the ledges.

Interested in this as I have got a code on the exhaust side and 0x3100. When does yours throw a code? Cruise or WOT?
I am guessing damage to cam ledges would show up as metal shavings in your oil filter or oil.

Check the vanos strainers/check valves too,

Pull the cam sensors also to check for gunk buildup and if you can clean the vanos trigger wheels if you have a slightly neglected engine.

The damage could have occurred many thousands of miles ago under previous ownership. Metal shavings, or lack there of, are not a definitive clue about the health of the cam ledge sealing surfaces. Only way to be sure is to open them up and look. I was convinced mine were bad, but they were fine, I did all of the above posters mentioned and more. Problem was vanos solenoids all along.

Some believe that unless you go with OEM solenoids, which are Pierburg, you will get vanos problems. I am not sure I subscribe to that, but I did get it to throw a vanos code once on hard acceleration, I purchased NTK from RA. I am going to see if RA gets Pierburg back in stock and get a pair eventually. Or maybe just get them from ECS or FCP with the lifetime warranties they both offer.
