Buy from dealership or elsewhere?

Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster!

In the market for a used e92 335i at the moment (07 - 09, max $40k before taxes).
Wanted an opinion from those of you who have bought their rides from a BMW dealership, private seller, or, a used car lot. I have also thought about importing a car from the US and have read the threads related to it.

I am obviously leaning towards buying from a BMW dealership somewhere in Ontario, but would like to know the risks I would be taking if I buy elsewhere. I have heard stories where the mileage has been rolled back or where US cars have been 'repaired' and sold here. I do have access to two BMW dealership mechanics that I know through a friend; if I ever decide to check something out. I have been eying a certain offering from the following dealership: http://www.farazautosalesltd.ca/used...3eae27704f.htm

From the VIN and instrument cluster I understand that this is a US vehicle. It has the options I want and more. I googled the dealership and there have been a few complaints. Should I even bother with this car, or wait until a similar offering is up at BMW?

Feel free to share your experiences. I'd appreciate any advice I can get!

Stay away from Faraz
http://forums.redflagdeals.com/faraz...y-them-903738/

Buying from used dealers is such a hassle. Most of them are shady and I've heard too many horror stories of people trying to resolve issues after the sale.

I would go CPO from a BMW dealership but if you really want to save money then either go private or import from the US. You'll just have to do more work up front if looking at private sales and importing.

If you want peace of mind go with BMW CPO cars.

With that kind of budget you can easily find a nice CPO 335i with decent mileage.

I would recommend a private deal with full service history. If there aren't any cars that fit your bill in the private market, then keep an eye on the CPO inventory for your local BMW dealers.

Hmm thanks guys!
I have widened my search to include Quebec. Definitely is tough though, waiting on CPOs that go up based exactly on options I want. Been finding a lot of x-drive cars on bmw.ca's inventory (primarily want RWD). Also, too many Automatics! Manual w/ sport package are the two main factors I need (want).

Realized lately that I will need to open up my preferences on the other options. Not in any rush to get a car but hey, my current car is at a good point that I can sell it (Accord i4 03 coupe, 140k km) for a grand or 2 less than what I bought it for (had it for almost 3 years, only put 30k on it). And of course I want to enjoy my drives!!

I can hook you up with anything in our inventory at Serpa BMW. No horror stories with us guaranteed! If there isn't anything we have that you are looking for, we can definitely find you what you are looking for.

PM me if you are interested and I can guide you in the right direction.

Cheers

I would go for a private sale or CPO. Almost anything at an independent dealer is going to be a lease return that no BMW dealer wanted to buy since I believe they get the first option. Usually that would be because of accident history, high mileage or other similar problems.

Dude don't go to a dealer you pay double the amount in interest for a lower rate, makes no business sense.

With that kinda of budget and the economic situation along with release of a new model you can get a fully loaded E93 for that price from a small private dealer.

I picked up my 08 E93 fully loaded for 39k with 66k on the clock back six months ago and had a great experience. A friend referred me to...
Carenthusiast.com or .ca can't remember. Check out their inventory.

They're at ellesmere and warden, great set of cars. Tell em I sent you they'll take care of you.

Thanks guys, I shall look into your suggestions. I guess it comes down to getting a thorough check by a mechanic if I don't buy a CPO.
Cheers.

Keep in mind that getting a CPO also gets you the CPO warranty, which lasts 2 years after the factory warranty expires ($50 deductible). I've used it on a few occasions and it was well worth it. Having said that, I no longer have any warranty, and don't care all that much

+1

My neighbor is looking into getting a used 335 by private deal off Kijiji but the problem is if you don't know what kind of gas they put in it, your HPFP warranty could be voided. (like if they put high ethanol gas in the car) Even with a mechanic's inspection, it might be hard to catch that unless they actually test for ethanol in the fuel line. And HPFP's are pricey to replace on your own out of warranty.

A BMW CPO car would at least cover you for that because you're buying that assurance that they'll look after you for that.

Check out the link below... I had a good experience with them. Keep an eye on their inventory, usually a good selection of low to very low mileage cars on there.

It was my understanding that our cars were built to handle some ethanol content. I always used Petro 91 and I never had the HPFP problem. Mine was only replaced because the dealer said they would do it (via re-call campaign.) In addition, the HPFP warranty was extended - this was specified to me by the BMW dealer (Parkview.)

I don't think HPFP issue is related to the type of gas. That has been debated quite extensively.

However again, this was my understanding in reading various posts on this forum and disscussions with a couple of BMW dealers.

Perhaps you are right. I am not trying to argue, just trying to find out myself and clarify.

I think whats important is that the HPFP has been replaced at some point and there is proof of that.

I had a great experience with Car Lounge in Oakville - used to work in the car business, their cars are very clean, and Sam from Cross Auto (great guy) takes a good look and inspects and passes them himself. Nabil is the sales manager, he's very fair and he will be able to hook you up. PM me if you want his number or for me to reference myself to him when you talk to him.
