Please dont start bashing because you didnt read clearly, my point was that if the tips are seperated I would be down, if they are side by side like the 328 I would likely not. Mr. 5 was picking up what I was throwing down.

sorry guys I guess I was not clear enough. The system would be one 3" pipe from the downpipes back into one muffler. From there it would exit into two pipes, one on either side of the car like factory.
This would not only hide the muffler but allow for a much lighter system. We would not eliminate one side of tips. I did not mean two tips on one side but one tip on either side totaling two tips like stock. Hope that helps. From the back of the car you would have no way of telling it was a single 3" pipe from the downpipes back And you would not see the muffler nearly as much as in other systems. There really is no negative. We just wanted to know how married you guys were to true dual exhaust if we could prove that a single pipe splitting later off was not only just as effective but lighter and cheaper. Eric |

I'm certainly not married to a true dual system, especially if it's lighter than stock. I would be definitely interested if it's in the $1000-$1500 range.

so dual tips like the stock set up? therefore both tips would be functional correct? this is my understanding. If so i would be very interested making it cheaper and hopefully giving it a nicer sound.

So you're basically making section 1 and 2 of the catback system one 3'' instead of two 2.5'' pipes and two Y pipes at both ends. I don't think the weight saving will be that significant since section 1 and 2 don't weigh very much anyways, in the end we still have two DPs and two mufflers.
For example, if you're going a make a system this way, and a true dual system, all else being equal, the weight saving won't be more than 10lbs IMO. |

This would more than likely have one muffler with a single 3" entry and two 3" Exits. Eric |

I'm just wondering if you built a true dual system yourself, how much heavier will it be than the single 3'' design you have in mind? |

great idea on the exhaust but my mind is too distracted on the turbo upgrade. Bless the tuner gods for answering my prayers since I sold my evo IX

I read this and I assume they are wanting to go with a single turbo upgrade. It would make sense to have a single exhaust to go along with it. Plus I could see a tad of weight reduction, I don't know if I am all about having a Y pipe (turbulence where they meet) then a single muffler splitting the exhaust out of 2 tips (again, some turbulence probably?). Anyway, like I said I think going 1 3" pipe has more to do with a single turbo setup in the future. Either way, power can be good with this setup.
By the way, the picture of that exhaust looks like a 350z |

You will lose some power in joining the exhaust into one. It creates backpressure at that point. You will create some more backpressure when divorcing the single into two.
It is not only about having smaller total exhaust size by going from 2 to 1, but exhausts should avoid any bends / joining / splitting...they should be as straight as possible. |

Single 3" makes sense for a single turbo upgrade, but I don't think that's enough to justify making a single 3" exhaust. Plus I've a feeling still more people wants upgraded twins instead of single turbo anyways. I'm also skeptical about the sound of single exhaust after hearing how shitty 135i's sound, even with aftermarket exhaust. 335i with aftermarket exhaust sounds way better IMO. |
