3M Blue Painters Tape? Anyone?
Anyone use 3M blue painters tape to tape up their front end when they go on road trips? Is there any harm to your cars paint by using the tape?
I've driven from Nor Cal to So Cal before and your front end just gets slammed with a bunch of bug shit and its hard to take off when you go to wash your car. Any suggestions? |

This is pretty standard. It won't damage your paint or anything like that.

I did it for my 2600 mile drive cross-country. I thought there would be more bugs based on past drives in Oklahoma and Texas, but the car looked pretty clean when i took off the tape.

Do it.... it is a pretty common solution around here.

Bought my car from Calgary BMW. Drove my car back to Edmonton in the winter.
Was to get my 3M done in Edmonton since my friend worked for a garage that did 3M. So I had to make my own clear bra for the trip back to protect the paint (contact shelf paper and masking tape). The contact shelf paper was hard to work with and I found the masking tape much easier. Of course, using the two made the car really ugly when driving it back...man, I can't tell you what it feels like driving a car that turns so many heads... I used the green automotive tape. It's really the same stuff. It worked well and lasted the trip back in -30 degree weather. Thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193504 Good luck taping that on every single trip you do on a highway. I would go insane personally. Just get the 3M clear bra and a bottle of bug & tar remover. 3M clear bra to keep the debris from scratching your paint job and from paint etching from the bugs and the bug & tar remover to get rid of the bugs easily with a good wash right after your road trip. 3M bra can be polished too to remove scratches. And I drive Edmonton to Calgary and back (2x296 km or 2x183 miles) on a bi-monthly basis. Bugs and rocks are just normal so I have the 3M clear bra on the front and ClearPlex (like the 3M clear bra) for my windshield. |

That tape could reduce other driving nuisances as well. If you have an annoying passenger, you can tape their mouth shut. You can even tape them to the seat so they can't move around.

Yea i seen people put tape on their cars for funny sayings and stuff etc. As far as to protect it from rock and stuff seems a little over the top. (that could be cause I drive on highways all the time)

While I normally subscribe to the notion that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, it can be taken too far.
I think that all fastidious owners should familiarize themselves with Dr. Colorchip. Plain old non-severe stone chips can be fixed really easily. Anything bad enough that couldn't be easily fixed also wouldn't be prevented by painter's tape. I found this stuff worked great on two E39s, and I already have a kit on the way for my new-to-me E90. After I DRC it, then I'll look at DIYing some 3M film from XPel. |

Thank you for posting that. I mean seriously, so you get some rock chips or bugs on your car...it happens. Why not just go back to the 1980's and get a "LeBra" for your sweet ride.
