Tyre decisions
I need a new rear
To buy a new runflat will be £300 or... I could replace all 4 tyres for £610 (fitted) with Falken 452 or £930 (fitted) for Cont SC2's or £1182 (fitted) for Michelin Pilot Sport 2 What would you buy? I'm tempted by the Falken's but would pay the extra for the Conti's if they are worth the extra 30%

Isn't there a new PS out soon?
Having used PS on my Impreza and R26 I would take that option. Only thing I found was they melted a fair bit quicker than Bridgestones on track. I guess the carcass heats up a lot faster. But for outright grip, I guess you get what you pay for. |

Bear in mind I'm used to running around on Bridgestone runflats at the moment!

Can you get Goodyear F1 Eagles in your size?
I do like the PS2's but on my S3 the F1 Eagles were probably the best tyre i've driven (not including the stupid Dunlops on the fast datsun which are only available through dealers now!) No idea with the conti or falkens. I guess it depends how enthusiastically you drive? I'm always one to buy the best tyre going because i wrote off my Fiesta mk2 (which i'd put so much elbow grease into) when i was 18 when i put on these new cheap but supposedly brilliant tyres then first sign of rain i understeered off a corner i'd done lots of times faster with michelins (not even top notch ones but i forget the name it was 18 years ago) in the rain. So since then if i buy cheap, i drive slow. If i want to go fast i justify the cost in that my life is worth a wee bit more! (wow - i really must have a head cold ) |

An exhaustive test Quote " I am running Falken 452's which I have found to be equally as good as Michelin pilot sport 2's(my previous tyres) in the wet"

In that case go for the Falkens
The SC2 isn't rated very highly at all, and the PS2, while it's undoubtedly a superb tyre, simply isn't twice as good as the Falken. What price will the Conti SC3 come in at? |

Say they allow even 5% higher speeds before letting go....that's worth it in my book. I always think back to the block of wood on a slope experiment at school (it was a while ago!)where you increase the slope till the block starts moving (car starts skidding) and despite reducing the angle of the slope the block keeps going down. One of Newtons laws i forget which. But that's how i view tyres. Give yourself the best you can afford. eg i see guys on GTR forum spending money on CF then looking to skimp on tyres...makes no sense to me. But i guess it depends on how you drive etc. The vast majority of the time most of us will be well within our tyres capabilities, but i'm thinking of those unexpected moments. Anyway...i'll butt out now |

Also curious about which tyres to fit on my 330i - only had the car for a bit over a month and can't stand the run-flats. It has Continental SC2 all round (225/45/17) - the front set seems to be the original that the car would have been sold with based on their age, the rear set must have been fitted within the last year or so but look really new still. And apart from the tramlining and often hard ride the front set are very noisy - almost as if the wheel bearing are shot!
Anyway, I have been reading through a few threads on this forum and I see that there is a lot of good things being said about the Goodyear F1 Assy, Falkens, Michelin PS2 etc. What about tyres like Hankook Ventus V12, Yokohama ADVAN Sport V103 or the Kumho KU31? I am considering looking at either the Goodyears, the Michelins, the Yokohamas, or the Hankooks. Are there any of the run-flats that don't tramline or are very close to non run-flats? Philip |

It's a fair point re paying the extra for the extra grip. Most of the driving I do is on Motorways. I do like to drive enthusiastically on the odd occasion though ;-)
My question is - Will the 452's give me similar or better/worse grip than the old school Bridgstone rft's I have on. RFT = £1200 vs 452 for £600

Paul, surely you mean Conti SC3's not 2's??
The 2's are a small car, mid-range spec tyre, the 3's are a high end tyre and the only one you would want to put on your bimmer for sure. They're cheaper than PS2, so from your price you must mean SC3's?? |

Ah, I've found the tyre sizes -
245/40/19 275/35/19 I'd avoid the Continental SportContact2 - old tyre, been surpassed by many other tyres at cheaper prices. Michelin PS2 are good as you know I'd say - but expensive for your tyre size. Michelin PS3 is new and available in the front only (and is cheaper than PS2) - rear size not available till next year. If it were me, I'd avoid the Falken 452s as well - good budget tyre, good grip in the dry, but outclassed in the wet (IMO) and I don't think it's that great an idea for a 300+bhp car. I'd personally go for PS2s, cost unrestricted, or for a more sensible option, I'd go with the new Pirelli P Zero Rosso system. The P Zeros have recently been updated (in the last six months) and the new compound is miles better than before. The Pirelli P Zero system is good - you have a choice of going for Assimetricos all round, or a mix of Direzionale (front) and Assimetrico (rear). I personally would go with the mixed setup, as it gives better steering feel and straight line stability. Both available from www.mytyres.co.uk P Zero Direzionale (front) in 245/40/19 (http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.p...110&sowigan=So) P Zero Assimetrico (rear) in 275/35/19 (http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.p...110&sowigan=So) Total package deal via the website is £820.40 delivered
