You'll be fine. Yellow warning means it's low, top it off. Red is when you worry. The car probably shuts itself down or goes into limp mode at that point, before you can really damage anything.

Can we just fill the reservoir with 50/50 distilled water/BMW coolant or do we need to bleed/drain it in any way? Coolant level low flashed on my idrive screen, just want to get it taken care of.

Antifreeze

I just talked to my BMW Dealer service department because my coolant light came on this morning. I asked him if I need to bring my car in for service because of the coolant light and he said I could if I wanted to and they would top it off for free. I asked him if I had to use BMW coolant on my 2007 BMW 328i and he said no that I don't have to use BMW coolant. He went on to say if I wanted to do it myself I could, so he recommended Prestone 50/50.

I had this issue last month. Took it in to the dealer and they "topped it off" and set me up an appt with loaner car about a week later to address a weird vibration noise coming from the rear end. Over the weekend the car overheated and I dropped it off at the dealer. They found the coolant overflow reservoir had a crack in it. The dealer replaced it with a new one under warranty. Upon getting my car back the coolant light came back on the very next day (usually right at start up and then again 10 miles or so down the road) After the over heating incident I am scared to drive it any farther. I took it back in and they told me I was overreacted. They topped it off and pressure tested it with no leaks; they also drove it for 20 or so miles without the light coming on. Well here we are two days after getting it back again the low coolant light is coming on when I start the car up after sitting all day at work and again this morning. I know the weather is getting colder, but this seems ridiculous having just come out of the shop not 48 hours prior. Anyone have any suggestions?

That's not right. Maybe it's a bad sensor. Once I topped mine off I have been fine since.
