Carbon Cleaning on N54

Has anyone priced the carbon cleaning (walnut blasting) at local dealers? I have an 07 335i with 50k and I suspect carbon build up. I'm getting a slightly rough idle despite new plugs and HPFP.

Any idea if CPO covers the cleaning? From what I hear it is nearly impossible to throw a code from bad buildup.

When I had my 335i. I did a carbon cleaning at a shop for $150 if I remember correctly. Was not walnut or seafoam. They had the system that hooked up to a connection in the head and exhaust, and ran chemicals. I did alot of research and found it and saw that a shop I trusted, Hillmuth of Columbia, had it. I reset my mpg and ran it for a week prior to it, about 1k mile, and an after test. Engine ran smoother and I went from 22 mpg to 25 mpg with my mix of city and highway driving habits.

I am in desperate need of carbon cleaning as well and everything I have read on the subject says that chemical cleaning doesn't work.

+4 I need it to at 56k now....and cannot get the pictures of gunked N54 valves out of head.

I was thinking of approaching BMW of Sterling and ask them if they'd give a "group" rate for walnut blasting. They typically charge $800-$900.

I'd be willing to pay ~$500 for the walnut blasting.

Whaddya think?

Guys,

My BMW tech buddy can do this here at my shop for $400. His method will not include walnut shells but I can guarantee the same result. PM me if you're interested.

so i know in theory all this cleaning is a great idea, but realistically, has anyone noticed a difference? MPG can be iffy depending on driving conditions and driving style so im taking that with a grain of salt

When I get my car back, I'll probably be interested in this. I'll send you a pm when ready!

Guys, I have had several requests and we will be happy to accommodate any and all who are interested in having this done. First I need to comfirm Ryan's schedule before moving forward. I'll get back to everyone once I do.

For those of you who haven't been to my shop, I'm in Dayton, Md.

Ok, we have three opening for cleanings this Saturday, the 7th. Cost is $400

Morning - 9
Midday - 12-1
Afternoon 4-5

If anyone wants a Friday evening appointment, I can drag him here for that too.

Plan on about 3 hours for the service. You are welcome to hang out and BS with us or drop off and pick up later.

Rich, you get first crack at a time slot as you were first to request this date.

What actually will he do? Is this chemical, some hand cleaning?
$400 may be a good price depending. My dealer will do a chemical cleaning for $200 and local shop for $150, so it would be nice to know.

You are in, Rich. I will confirm tomorrow, but there is a good chance that we can have the shell blaster here on Saturday. I'll report back once I know for sure.

As long as they get clean, the method doesn't matter to me. That stuff is nasty looking from the pics I've seen of other cars.
