Upgrading Brakes on 328 - Stay stock up front or go 335?
Pretty much like the title states ...
I will be needing rear brakes soon, so I figured I'd do a performance upgrade at all 4 corners (most likely Powerstop Z23 Evolution Sport). I understand the front brakes from a 335 are plug and play but the rears aren't due to the parking break. Since I don't care to deal with the parking break, I'm thinking of putting 335 fitment brakes up front and keep 328's on the rear. Is it worthwhile to do this ... or should I just stick with 328 fitment and just go with performance rotors and pads at all 4 corners? Thanks for your help.

I read through the thread ... what does it have to do with whether or not to bother going 335 front 328 rear OR stay 328 front and rear? This was the only thing that mentioned 335 front and 328 rear in the whole thread.

I think what Bluesyes is trying to say here N52unded is that this topic has really been beat to death in the forums. One simple search will spill pages upon pages of information about this subject...everyone has an opinion...
I did the same research about a year ago and read through these pages upon pages of information. In the end there are a couple of questions that commonly run through all the posts. 1. Do you intend to track the car for fun days. 2. What do you want in your car. The simple skinny from what I have read is this...yes a lot of people think it is a very worth while upgrade for the 328. If you can get the parts cheap. Some E-Models can actually run the rear 335's as well...I'll post a couple links below to threads I thought were very useful when I was looking to do this upgrade. In the end I went with the BMW performance upgrade kit. I don't track my car, I don't drive it hard...it is a summer car only but I wanted to upgrade my brakes. Overkill? Sure, I totally agree. But...my money...my car. Constructive criticism always welcome. Upgrading brakes on a 328i is a "never go wrong" choice for an improvement IMO. Your money, your car. But I don't think you will be unhappy on this one... The thing is ... I have researched. Hours of it. I'm not a post first, research later kind of person. I only ask when it's something specific that I'm not quite finding through research. I've read those posts you linked previously ... each turn into "fitment" threads, and threads full of side tracked discussions. Like so many others. Others discuss 335 vs 328 regarding oem takeoffs or something stock (calipers, pads, hoses, etc). OR i get the same person stating the same thing in another thread. There's only been one person comparing 335 brakes vs Performance brakes and stating they're about equal ... but that's not quite my situation. Still thanks for taking the time to post those links. I understand the fitment aspect and issues I understand that stock 335 brakes stop better than stock 328 brakes I understand that stock 335 brakes are close in performance vs upgraded performance 328 brakes. I just trying to figure out if going with aftermarket performance 335 front with same brand aftermarket performance 328 rear brakes is a worth while project ... vs ... staying with aftermarket performance 328 brakes on all corners. If the aftermarket performance of 328(all 4) and 335(F)/328(R) are close enough in performance for a daily driver - non tracked car, it's something I won't bother doing. Currently I'm looking at: performance 335 fronts and performance 328 rears. Unless I find some info that says it's not worth it for the extra costs and hassle and to stick to performance 328 at each corner.

Ok....well. I think I understand what you are asking here. Let me see if I can help. In my group of close friends one has a 2009 328i with 335 brakes on the front and rear. It is a Cabriolet so he had no issues putting the rear 335i brakes on as well. It stops on a dime....he is very happy with it and swears it is "a sweet upgrade"... he got lucky tho and got them from a totaled 335 for a song at the junk yard. He was in the right place at the right time. I don't know anyone in my group or the parking lot group with "performance" 335 brakes. So my apologies I can't help you there. But like I said in my earlier post the BMW performance upgrade kit...the one listed below, I found to be, a massive difference. I don't think you will be disappointed in anyway with kit below for your needs. You have a lot of options and at the end of the day you have to make the decision...educated decisions are good of course but you can over analyze some things.... 335i brakes put on a 328i. Excellent upgrade according to 90% of what I have read. 328i BMW BB performance kit. Excellent upgrade and I speak from experience. If it was me and I had to do over again? I would still go with what I chose the first time. Daily driver...no track days....highway driving. I like the idea of keeping it all the same too on all corners. Not mixing and matching. That's just my opinion of course. Lots of people do it...just it doesn't sit well with me and my line of work or thinking.. Well I hope this helps you in your decision. Others here maybe able to help you better but I think the choice and details are before you. You just have to pull the trigger... Thanks ... you've helped more than you know. It's great food for thought. And perhaps this thread can help the next person who's looking for info that's not fitment related.

So I'm guessing the rears are an issue in this case too, correct? Thanks for the pics too ... those brakes look sweet. Pretty much what I'm looking for ... I totally dig the M ones.

The fronts are direct bolt-on. The rears on the other hand are not. You will need to cut the dust shields behind the rotor and do some machining to the caliper base, because of something about the mounting points not lining up. Also if you do front + rears you will have to upgrade to the m3 brake master cylinder, which you can find used on Ebay for a reasonable price.

330i front brakes are a cheap and easy upgrade. You only need to source 330mm rotors and 330i caliper brackets as you reuse your calipers and pads.

I've just completed a 335i brake swap to my 2007 325i.
After competing the fronts alone I took the car out to try them out and was very impressed with what the fronts alone could do, mind you I had also installed ECS brass bushings and SS brake lines. If you go with 335i brakes as an upgrade you will be very impressed, my whole conversion front and rear was done for $1200.00 Aussie Dollars about $900.00 US Dollars, the Brembo based swaps cost much more. If money is an issue, go with 335i brakes, if its not go Brembo. Mike |

shields to f30 Performance shields, but had bent them in so the air scoops didn't show or work. I simply bent the scoops back out so they would work again and reused them. I would recommend the F30 shields for better brake cooling over the E90 ones anyway, have a look at this link its about 135's but you'll get my point. https://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=663510 Mike |
