Oversized side profile tyres

Dear fellow forum residents,

I am a proud owner of a '10 E90 LCI 320d. The stock tyre config is 205/55 r16.

I must reveal im from india so market specially tyre market is not yet free like in other places.

My question is can i fit a 205/65 r16? I understand that this will cause speedo issues but am a mostly sedate driver, car is a showpiece used atmost once a week to run around the city and once 6 months for a 1200kms round trip.

The reason for my peculiar request is the market realities in my country, where 205/55 is a rare size hence much more expensive than 205/65.

your kind help and assistance would be highly appreciated.

Regards
Dr. Kumar

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't fit - assuming the suspension geometry in India is the same as here in the USA. To calculate how much space a tire/wheel package will take up - you simply multiply the tire width by the aspect ratio and then add the diameter of the wheel.

So - your current tire and wheel package is 205/55 16. So, 205mm x 0.55 = 112.75mm + 16" wheel = 406.40mm = Total package diameter is 519.15mm

When looking at other wheel options that came with the BMW E90 platform:

225/45 17 & 225/40 18 - These come out to 533mm and 547mm, rounded respectively.

Your tire that you want to put on will generate a larger sidewall then what you currently have, and will put you at a total diameter of 539.65mm. This appears to fall within the range of factory OEM BMW tire and wheel packages, so it seems to be it would fit just fine - and also give a more comfortable, but less sporty, ride.

You may want to see if these things are all the same in India - but I think it would work just fine for what you are looking for.

Regards.

That's definitely not going to fit in the front, that's a huge tire. 205/60/16 MIGHT fit, even that will be close.

Dear Sir,
Pleased to inform you that 205/65 r16 fit very nicely. No scrubbing rubbing or any weird fitment issues.

I was really afraid after you said it wouldn't fit. But it thankfully did.
i saved a big bunch of money.

Car drives nicely too.
