just had a new clutch put in by a shop, mechanic said he can hear or feel the gears turning in the transmission, but the car doesnt move. he says he hears a whining noise coming from the transfer case and he thinks thats what it is, but he doesnt have bmw software to complete his diagnostics.

Can the transfer case cause the car to not move at all? Usually I'm reading that people can still drive RWD with bad transfer case.

Would unplugging transfer case fuses and/or disconnecting front drive shafts change anything inside the transfer case and allow it to open up to rwd again if its completely stuck or blown like my situation?

What steps should I go through to determine my problem? I'm thinking figure out how to use INPA and monitor input and output speeds from the transmission via live data? I think we've narrowed it down to either a bad transfer case or bad transmission...

I just bought the car a few months ago and it happened within my first 1000 miles of ownership, the car was making a thud when going into gear at low speeds, and eventually it happened even louder one time and everything gave out. I had a code for transfer case oil wear, I'm unsure if it has ever been changed.

The mechanic that replaced the clutch said it came out in a few pieces... I was not beating on the car that badly, and I bought it with the problem. Was driving very normally when it gave out

The atc300 transfer case works by having an output shaft from the transmission go directly mated to a female in the transfer case and then with an output shaft for the guibo outside the other side of the transfer case. Only way it could be that the transfer case could be causing the car not to move would be either the transmission output shaft into the case is stripped or the case shaft that mates w the one from the transmission is too. There is a direct connection between the transmission and the rear wheels. You only send power to the front when the transfer case clutches engage and attach the front driveshaft to be driven off of this direct connection you have to the rear wheels.

I doubt your issue is in the case itself but if you were doing the work yourself you could just remove the case and see if there's movement coming out of the transmission shaft into it. It's not that big of a deal to remove it it's not a huge unit.

Actually just remembered this video I watched from this guy that rebuilds transmissions of a 6l45 (auto) with the output shaft stripped off..

Okay, I’ll check that. We suspect that when the transmission gave out it took the clutch with it.

Now once I figure out that it is in fact the transmission, if I’m just swapping in a used trans in it, will I need to have a dealership or shop code the trans in or is that something you can do yourself with INPA

That's a manual transmission so I doubt it needs any sort of coding. What went out in the transmission?

Output shaft is stripped just as you said. Input shaft of the transfer case doesn't look stripped but theres a lot of rust and metal shavings from the trans output shaft. Is this transfer case savable, could I rebuild it, or clean it out and reuse, or should I replace that as well?

Ouch. As expected. If the transfer case worked fine idk why replace it. Just clean real nice the whole input shaft area in the transfer case and grease it with some high resistance high temp grease. Sucks the shaft is screwed. Idk if it can be replaced without opening the transmission but hopefully is.

can't tell shit about the case input until you clean all that nasty off.


if you install the case with worn input onto your new transmission the slop will end up eating the output shaft splines again.

make sure to use grease at the interface.

If it were mine, I'd replace the input at the case.

Not sure where I can find a new input for the transfer case. I’ll probably just replace the whole thing

well, clean it all up and see what it looks like.

if the splines aren't rounded off and still have sharp chamfers, run it.

it's possible they were of a harder material than the output.
