My exhaust tailpipes are filthy
Since I bought the car I have not cleaned the tailpipes and they have become pretty gross looking. They are completely black and look nasty. I was wondering if there was anything out there that removed this exhaust residue off of it to make it look shiny and new again, obviously some elbow grease will be required.
Any ideas brahhss?? |

By chrome tips you mean the actual exhaust metal itself right? There are no custom exhaust tips on mine. Where did you get the Autosol from and how much was it?

I have the matt chrome tips (not the shiny).
I have found the best thing is astonish oven/cookware cleaner works the best. Works much better than most things I have used. Its much easier if you remove the tips (easy to do) that way you can easily get all the way around the tip. http://www.choiceful.com/prod_image/52462_m.jpg Its VERY VERY cheap and works well. Also works well at getting rid of stubborn brake residue on the INSIDE of wheels, but bear in mind this is a mild abrasive. Makes my exhaust tip as good as new. Although if you have shiny chrome one I would test it first in an area that wont show just in case! Although, to be honest, as soon as you go back out in the car for a drive it will be dirty again so I wouldn't be too bothered about getting it super clean.

Do ya really
ON TOPIC! I use a Karcher Pressure Washer on my car then wash the bodywork with car shampoo, after that I get some wheel cleaner out and do the wheels have once done the exhaust tips with that too, I've got chrome ones too, then rinse it all off with the pressure washer, really excellent bit of kit, that, just takes a while to set up depending on where your outside hose tap is!

Wanna sample or inspect my tip Nicola DO YA.
You gotta be careful as the acid can wreck the chrome if it gets under the skin. |

i find that using some autoglym intensive tar remover removes most of the crap off the pipes - start with bucket of soapy (bodywork shampoo) water then the tar remover. brings them up like new!

Autosol for me. I have a 320D with the brushed alloy and its superb. Most other cars I've owned had chrome tips and Autsol was, without a doubt, the easiest to use and get a good result, and it the same with the brushed alu as well.
You could use super fine wire wool and then some polish, but thats more work, but the tiops are super dirty and grimed up then it might be worth while using something mreo abrasive like wire wool to start off. There's plenty of cutting / polsihing compounds out there that will give a good result. Once done I recommend a wee clean every other week unless you do a heck of a lot of miles than do them once a week..... once clean, its only a 5 min job to keep them clean.
