I think some people fail to replace it because they dont know there is a filter thats built in. I have to admit that I never knew, but then again I never gave it any thought. Am I correct in assuming that all power steering reservoirs for the E90 have a built in filter?

Yeah things just add up and then you have to leave extra because you just never know what is going to fail when its not part of maintenance. Like starter and alternator...

Same here, I did not know this until now.

Did you change the bushings (mount) as well? I don't have a pic of my car brand new, but it seems the reservoir sits tilted back, and I doubt it was like that brand new.

Easiest fix for the bushings is to take the reservoir loose, take the inserts out of the bushings, rotate the bushings 180 degrees and put it back together.

I also didn't know this...
What symptoms would trigger the need to replace the reservoir/filter?

My guess would be whining from the pump. If the filter was clogged that would mean not enough fluid is getting to the pump, which can result is whining. Keep in mind that depending on how low the system is on fluid, the whining would could happen at small turns of the wheel (i.e. the system is really low on fluid) or only when close to full lock (i.e. just needs to be topped off).

The symptoms could be the fluid not getting to the PS pump as someone said above. This could result in the PS Pump overworking and creating noises because the fluid is not sufficiently pumped through.

As for which models, I cannot guarantee but I believe all the E9X vehicles use the same power steering reservoir.

Yes, they have a non-serviceable filter. This means that you have to replace the reservoir as the filter is built-in. As I previously mentioned, for around $40 you can buy the whole PS kit which includes the reservoir, fluid, and clamps for the hoses. Easy to replace and well worth it as preventative maintenance in the long-run. I would recommend replacing it if you are above 100k miles just as a preventative measure.

Today I installed a new oil filter housing gasket (definitely more painful without that 1/4" E10 socket and ujoint the pelican guys have, grr).
Since I pulled out the alternator, I figured I'd replace the tensioner while i was in there, since the deflection in the bolt was already causing the belt to go 1/8" or so over the edge of the pulley.
Next up, updating maps on the CIC and turning on BMW Apps. Tomorrow I'll wash off the engine cleaner/degreaser I sprayed in there. What a mess.

Any details on where I could find a power steering pump kit? I'm familiar with the common vendors for our cars, just not sure who sells the complete kit you mentioned.

The discussion was about the reservoir kit, not a pump kit.

Replaced the small DISA valve on Saturday, it was apparently not activating correctly. Much smoother power-band now.

Hey guys, sorry if this is the wrong place for this post, but I wasn't sure exactly where to put it. This weekend I was driving and my n55 335i and I got a yellow light for my engine overheating and then a red one right after. I immediately pulled over, turned off the car, and scanned for codes which showed 377a (Water Pump Blocked). I know this likely means the pump/ thermostat is bad but when i looked under the hood i saw coolant bubbling out of the expansion tank. Could the tank leaking cause this? I also did the water pump test once the car was cooled down and it was pumping water. Has anyone had any experiences like this? Thank you

Probably best to create a new thread about the issue. You'd get a bit more exposure that way and probably more people to chime in on the subject.
