N47 gearbox help
Hi all,
I've just lost reverse in my 2010 320d. I've done a search and found this to be a common problem that requires a gearbox change. I've found that the part number is GS6-45DZ HAK But when I search for used gearboxes there are many different part numbers and some physically look different, yet are advertised as fitting my car. Was there just a large crossover of gearbox that are interchangeable? Or do I need to match the part number correctly. The prices also vary from £200 up to £600 Any help would be appreciated. |

Yes thats where I got the part number from.
I just don't know how the gearboxs are different and if they are interchangeable. It seems strange that there is different gearboxes all for the same model of engine and chassis. |

Potential for some early gearbox's to predate stop/start. Meaning no zero gear sensor on those.
Can this reverse gear thing not be repaired? |

I'm assuming the differences in part numbers you're seeing are in the "HAZ" bit at the end? I'd guess that any GS6-45DZ box will fit, and mechanically work. Though as andystobbs says, you may miss the zero gear sensor etc.

Ah. I don't know about the 37DZ, but the 53DZ would fit a 325d or 330d, I believe...certainly a 330d. I have no idea whether they would actually fit, but I'd avoid them and find a 45DZ.
Though the 53DZ is a really solid box...but that makes me think it must be significantly different from the 45DZ. I imagine the 37DZ would be for a 316/318d or something. |

Sorry to jump on this old thread. But looking for a bit of help and advice for a very similar issue I have for a GS6-45 DZ/BZ gearbox. So any help would be much appreciated Tambohamilton & LAJB
2013 E92 320d LCI Start-Stop, Manual - VIN Last 7 digits: J112571 I most likely have a cracked/broken 2nd gear synchro. So am also looking at having the gearbox replaced. - Using a VIN decoder (realoem.com), (vindecoderz.com) the gearbox is coming up as a GS6-45BZ/DZ and the engine N47N. - Did you find out of any other suitable gearbox model replacements or does the gearbox I source need to be a GS6-45BZ/DZ? How do I know if mine is BZ or DZ as having a quick look, the model code isn't even stamped on the gearbox. Does the BZ/DZ possibly relate to the start-stop function? - Can I put in a non start-stop one? As I have found one listed for sale as a GS6-45DZ without start-stop, which is fairly near to my location. Obviously I'm aware the start-stop function would no longer work, but would the gearbox fit? Is it just a sensor for neutral? - If the gearbox model code isn't even stamped on the actual gearbox, how are you meant to determine it without using a VIN decoder? As I have seen some listed for sale but without any model info and no access to the VIN. - Any issues I should be aware of when getting the gearbox replaced? Obviously the risk of the sourced gearbox being faulty, seen on eBay most of them come with a warranty and returns. Any possible issues that could arise when the garage replaces the gearbox? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Matt |

B is for benzene (petrol), D is for diesel.
I think any gearbox of the correct code will fit and work, even start/stop. But I could be wrong. I'm more sure that it will at least work mechanically. |

Ahh ok that's good to know, cheers for the info; if it will work mechanically then possibly willing to take a gamble on the condition of it as its a lot cheaper and will still be bought through Ebay; so should have some sort of buyer protection; will need to double check that though.

Andystobbs Tambohamilton Do you know how the neutral gear sensor works? Can't find any information about it. Is it a magnetic switch? Depending on the logic, either breaking or making a circuit. If so could the sensor possibly be transferred over to the non start-stop gearbox I have found? Or would the non start-stop gearbox be missing the internal magnet/part which works together with the sensor?

The sensor part is attached on the top but there won't be any holes for the mounting bolts and its possible that the casting rib won't have been relieved to allow fitment of the sensors.
There is also a magnet on the selector shaft that is probably missing too. Are you struggling to get a box? They should be plentiful enough. |

I've got one you can have for half that if you're interested. Removed from A796105 at 170k miles. It is my own car and drove faultlessly. 2010 E91 320D N47D20C. With stop/start.
