Red Battery Light help!
So I was driving to school this morning... about 8 miles from my house. 3 miles in, this light comes on but I have to get to school so I just finish the drive, driving very easily just in case...
After all I've read, I've deduced its either the battery, alternator, or some belts. Would it be unsmart to drive the 12-13 miles to my mechanic with this problem? Should I find another mechanic by my school to check it out before driving back home? I just got this car about a month ago, and this is my first BMW and first problem so I want to go about this the best way possible. Thanks. |

I would guess it's the alternator. If you lost your belt you would have also lost power steering. Your battery is discharging as you're driving, so at some point it will run too low and the car will shut off. I recommend against driving it, but if you do, make sure to turn off all unnecessary electronics (radio, heater/AC, lights, etc).
