330d N57 Error codes, EGR, Swirl flap plausability, Power management - dashcam?

Hi

I recently installed a nextbase hardwire dashcam kit to a permanent live in the fusebox (think it was central locking), it cuts off power to the dashcam if voltage drops below 12V so as not to drain the battery.

I posted here in the general UK by mistake, I've now got more codes since then:

It was fine for about a month until recently, possibly unrelated to the dashcam hardwire but I got the following codes:

4E0F - Swirl flap plausibility.
4CAE - EGR position controller, position sensor, signal.
4A66 - Power management, vehicle electrical system.

Cleared them but now getting the following, including 4 new ones.

4E0F - Swirl flaps plausibility
4CAE - EGR controller, position sensor, signal

40D4 - EGR position controller, position control
3EED - Power management, closed circuit current violation
4C9E - EGR Valve, plausibility
4DFF - Swirl valve controller, position control

I've done a bit of research and seems the intake manifold, ASV and ports can be cleaned manually once off, albeit a bit labour intensive.

Not sure on the power management and what seems to be electrical signal related? I could be completely off on that.

No rough idle or issues with cold start, not noticed any performance difference.

It's had the ports walnut blasted at 85k when I had a rough start and idle, now on 109k.

Can anyone shed any light on next steps to resolve this? Ideally myself as I feel like it could be quite costly to diagnose, even if I'd be using a local BMW indy specialist.

Are your egr and swirl flaps vacuum actuated? Could be a simple vacuum leak, if so.

No idea on the power management codes, sorry. Though I would suggest checking battery voltage at the terminals and giving it a full charge with a good charger.

The EGR codes will be the actuator sticking, it can be greased, search on here.

The swirl flap codes will be because they are gunked up, manifold off & clean them up.

But if you've not adverse side effects like rough idling you could leave it.

Power management is probably down to the battery dropping down to 12v with the dashcam, BMW's don't like low voltage, try disconnecting the camera so it's not drawing power when the car is off and see if the code comes back.

Cheers for the replies.
I clear the codes and doesn’t come on again on start up, it’s okay for a few miles then just comes back on when driving along.

Makes me think it might not be the dashcam dropping below 12V or if it is that’s not causing the engine light? The hardwire kit has a controller that will shut off the camera from taking any charge it voltage drops below 12V.
Seems worth a try though to disconnect and see what happens.

I tried to get the cover off to grease or unstick the EGR valve cam, I’ve seen the post I think you’re talking about. Do you need to disconnect everything from it to lever both sides of that plastic cover because it feels like that cover will snap if I try and force it off?

12v is low for a car battery, that's the nominal voltage, BMW's don't like when the voltage drops, it may not be this but its quick & easy to disconnect it for a couple of days and eliminate that from the possible causes.


I tried to get the cover off the EGR on mine and felt like it was going to break LOL

Need another go really as I have the same code, but have watched the EGR live data using torque and it's moving just fine, so not overly worried as I've not EML, only the code that comes back randomly.


Swirl flaps is the more difficult one as all the inlet manifold has to come off and strip/clean all the gunk off, not seen many good guides on how to do that.

There is a guy on YouTube called RichDragonMan I found it on here, doesn’t cover disconnecting everything and removing the intake manifold but does a pretty good guide once it’s off.




There’s another guy who does it on a 5 series with N57 as well.

I know what you mean, but I'm clearing the codes/CEL though after having parked for a few days, and it doesn't come on right away starts and idles fine. That is when the demand is highest, i.e for starter motor?
So if that power management was a problem, it would come on right after a cold start? Maybe it is causing that code but it's not one that causes the CEL?

I haven't logged in for ages - hope you got it sorted by now.
I PM'd you as well.

I took it to an indy specialist and got a new EGR valve fitted. Touch wood it's been fine since.
Part number was 11717810871.
