Is there anyway to install the Radar Detector so that it remains hidden?
Or is this really illegal?

Nice work on the install.
Personally I think its less efficient to have the unit in eye sight of the road that you can read from and then move it down to your ash tray. Less time your eyes are on the road, the more thing that could go wrong. If you mount it in the same place but on the passenger side, its equally invisible and works without problems with the remote display module. I just end up telling my passengers they cant use the visor, if they whine, tell them to get in the trunk...no sun there.

i like my positioning. its perfect. doesnt get in the way, tho i have to do a bit of tweaking but nothing that will interfere with the wiring job. probably one of the easiest mods to do, and damn well needed!

how hard is it to remove the centerpiece to install the concealed display?
i would like to install my concealled display in the ashtray as well. Do you have to remove the whole center piece?

Not entirely sure what you mean by "center piece". If youre talking about the whole center console that winds its way to the armrest then its VERY easy to remove. Put your fingers on either side of the rubber coin tray(what I call it) and pull up. Make sure the armrest is in the completely up position first though. Once you have it pulled up you can just keep pulling along the whole way and the front part slides back. I removed the actual ashtray part to fit my concealed display in there.

You DO need to drill a hole at the bottom of the ashtray to guide the phonecord through for the concealed display. I drilled it while it was still in the car because I didnt want to remove the whole shifter and boot. Just lay a blanket or towel over the console area to catch the shavings. If you need ANY additional pics dont hesitate to ask and Ill post em up for you.

I grounded the hardwire at the hex bolt in the fusebox. You can see a pic of it in the picture I posted.

Finished it!! :rocks:
I hard wired it to the fusebox and grounded it to the hex nut on the left. It's the easiest and best DIY i have done. Highly recommend it. No need messing with the overhead console/lights. now, step 2: consealed display. i am dreading the fact of opening up the wood trim.

Has anyone tried this mount? I had one on my 350Z and it looked very 'factory'. Combine this with the concealed display ideas and it could be a great combo.

It's best to mount it above the rearview mirror in terms of functionally and hidden location from outside so it's not as obivious unless you look for it.

Old thread, but this and the other DIY thread on the V1 are excellent. What amazes me is how that little green wire (with white stripe) can power the V1. That detector must not draw much current.
I installed it exactly this way, and it works like a charm. |

Just completed the install. Not as easy as it might be.
One tip: The 'splice' holds the green and white wire very LOOSELY! The power was disconnecting intermittently after install. To solve this problem, I SOLDERED it to the green and white wire. I opened the splice, pulled out the aluminum piece that grabs the wire, then attached it to the wire (after stripping some insulation) by soldering it in place. I then put the aluminum piece back into the blue splice housing. This takes some care so you don't burn anything with the soldering iron. A 2 hr job for me, including scratching my head and thinking about some solutions to the loose connection. (one last thing, I wrapped a piece of rag around the black connector to keep it from rattling around)

I finally got this done,
It took me 4 tries before I realized that the HEX bolt for the ground was part of the instructions I ignored. Happy day.
