Flame tune on N/A possible?

Okay. Before anyone starts to bash me for asking, I'd just like to say that the goal of my build was to try to incorporate things that haven't been done before, or that would be unique to the car. This will be one of those.

- Yes, I know it may seem ricey to some people, but to others (including myself), it would be a very fun feature.

- Yes, I am aware that it's an N/A E90, and nowhere near as powerful as a 335i or an M3.

- Yes, I am aware that it might cause future problems with the car (that I'm willing to take care of).

Now that all of the disclaimers are out of the way...

Let's assume, for the situation, I am technically straight-piped (AA Catless Headers, Catless Midpipes, Muffler/Resonator delete).

I recently talked to a local tuner (of a reputable shop) who claimed he could create a flame/overrun tune for the 330i. I have never seen this done before; however, I have seen 1-2 N/A E9Xs spit flames on upshifts or downshifts.

That being said, does anyone think this tuner has the capability of creating a flame tune on a (rather) limited platform such as the E90 330i? I have seen many other N/A cars with flame tunes (even non-turbo'd E46s... MS43 etc). I'm also curious why no one has attempted it with the N/A E90s; it seems like a widely affordable and experimental platform now.

I'd like to hear everyone's input (based on tuning/modding experiences), but please refrain from telling me whether or not you like cars that spit flames... LOL. It appeals to my younger side, and that's my only excuse.

yep, that appears to be BPC. they no longer offer the N52 tune, but you should be able to still get it from the man who made it - Bob @ Stagefp

i think its a 128i with a 1M conversion bodykit, but i agree - a bit misleading calling it that

Okay, so I read a bit more about his build. N54 throttle body and N54 intake manifold, as well as S65 injectors to run full E85. I'm aware that BPC used to make N52 burble tunes, but I've never seen an N52 running that tune spit flames like that.

Is it safe to assume those flames would have only been possible through the supporting mods (and necessary custom tuning)?

Of coarse this is possible and feasible with a decent tune. Basically any straight piped car and tune can do this. Just have the tune dump some extra fuel after the the throttle cut and boom, flames.

Do you think exhaust diameter would make a large difference? I am thinking about doing a fully-custom catback with either 2.5" or 3.0" piping. Would 3.0" be more advantageous than the 2.5"?

I don't think it would make a difference.

My E90 with the N51 engine with no cats shoots flames with aggressive downshifts using the BPC tune.

Unfortunately no. My bud who was in his Z4 behind me saw it when we were doing pulls on the highway. Much more carbon deposits on the tips so I'm sure it's happening a bit more frequently.

I'm not too well versed in the science of flame shooting but I quite like the idea and would like to know what damage it does to the N52?

Is there a risk of damage to the exhaust valves, or the exhaust itself?

Yes it will make a difference. Hydraulic diameter of the exhaust makes a big performance difference on NA motors, you just can't make it bigger.

On a turbo motor back pressure is the enemy, so bigger the better, not so on NA motors.

You will shoot flames if you are catless and have a burble tune.

Flames come out of my exhaust when letting off the throttle between 4-5k or after aggressive downshifting
