Why you say that Will?
I thought the TV was OK, certainly the specs of it are good.

Have a look there - reviews of similar-generation Samsungs have been good

I used to really rate Samsung flat panel TV's and as far as picture quality goes, I still do (I have a 32" LCD in my conservatory). They do however appear to have a shocking customer service record. MY mate has a 46" panel that is now just coming up to 18 months old. He got it from an online retailer and paid £1400 (should have been £1800 at the time) so not a cheap and cheerful set. It has now developed a 'switch on' fault. The set often just sits there 'clicking' for a few minutes before it actually switches on. The online retailer blame Samsung and say he should contact them. Samsung say tough luck, it is out of warranty and to sort it with the online retailer.
After some searching online it appears it is a common problem and can be fixed by changing some capacitors in the power supply which are under-rated and fail prematurely at around 18 months. You would have thought that Samsung would recognise this and get the set fixed. He knows that he can go to small claims court etc as it should last for 6 years etc but why should he have all that hassle. I have orderd the parts and will fix the set for him tomorrow. As an electronics engineer it seems a simple job with many online instructions on how to do it. His father in law has the same set and that sometimes has the same problem. Parts to fix both TV's cost less than a tenner and it is a half hour job. This has put me off Samsung TV's now and I do really like those slim LED ones I would however consider Toshiba again (I have a 42" LCD in my lounge) as I received outstanding customer service earlier this year when my LCD set developed a small vertical shadow line in the middle of the screen. I googled the problem and it appeared hundreds of people have shared the same fault. My set however was almost 3 yrs old so I doubted I would get much done. After a phone call or two to Toshiba, they arranged a brand new 42" 100Hz set to be delivered and my old set collected and returned. All sorted within a week and even got a call a week or so later to make sure the delivery/collection had gone smoothly and that I was happy with my new (and far superior ) TV. Well done Toshiba, maybe you could offer Samsung some advice!! |
