Fault code 4A2E: Glow plug or glow plug controller?
I've seen a few threads on the glow plug controller. It seems to be a common issue and most of the threads I've seen show that this is the likely culprit.
Should I even bother with the glow plug in cylinder #5, or just replace the controller and call it a day? Thread for reference: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1316103 |

I had the exact same fault code 4A2E back in October. I changed the controller only and all is well again. Good luck, and hint, look into doing it without pulling the intake manifold, it is do-able, but a tight reach.
Footnote.....how is your thermostat? If it is not keeping temps around 88C, this is the reason your glow plug controller is shot. |

Thanks guys. Yeah Mark, that post I had linked to was your post. I remember seeing it a while back.
Funny you mention the thermostat. I had actually posted earlier that I was never hitting proper temps for a fully warmed up engine. So I guess I'll do both at the same time. My light is off for now. It seems to be intermittent and random. I'll start with the thermostat and see if the GP fault disappears. |

Please also remember that you can check the resistance of each glow plug and eliminate some fault possibilities this way. 4A2E is a Cyl.5 Glow Plug fault, but certainly may mean the control unit. Last edited by Yozh; 02-17-2017 at 02:01 AM.. |

Here is a little testing I've done on the Glow Plug parameters. This is from ignition off to start to drive 5 min or so.
The six parameters that dealt with shorts and open circuits have not shown any variation. Based on parameter tables they should show "0" if no fault and "1" if there is fault. Mine were at zero. I am not sure how this may be useful to anyone diagnosing the issues with glow plugs, but it certainly be interesting to see what parameters will be shown for a vehicle with glow plug issues. I have not found any parameters that deal with each individual glow plug diagnostics, yet. Last edited by Yozh; 02-20-2017 at 11:58 PM.. |

related problem - I have CELs PO64C and UO106 both something about losing communication with glow plug control module. I thought this was because of my battery getting weak. I never saw any CEL until winter when the glow plugs were used and the low battery symbol appeared.
What is the opinion will a battery fix this or is the module bad? Should I just replace battery, have the cel cleared and see if it comes back? I was taking the car to the stealership but have moved so it is no longer convenient. |

A simple way to test glowplugs is a resistance test. Get your multimeter out and go at it. It will be very apparent if you've got a dead one or not.

I just wanted to update this thread. It was indeed the glow plug controller/module. Replaced it without pulling the intake manifold, and replaced the thermostat as well. Thanks for the input from everyone!

It's a fun task blindly working deep under the intake by hand to fish that controller out. . |

Just popped one for 4A1F. Curious what the logs will show now.
Edit: I can't complain, this one lasted 200,000km/125,000mi being baked and shaken to death. |
