VANOS self-destruct in a 2011 328i

All,

Ive lurked on here a time or two, but rather infrequently. Ive been driving a '11 328i since the summer of '14, put about 20k on the odo since then. I'm sure this has been an issue for some already, but IMO the more documentation of issues out there, the better. For reference this occurred at approx 64,000 miles

About a week and half ago I was driving to work, noticed a loud whine, with a rough, jumpy idle 500-800 rpm high when I finally parked it. I shut it off in a commissary lot, and had a friend drive me the rest of the way to work. At the end of the day I attempted to drive it to the dealer (under an extended Gold warranty) but the car was supremely unhappy and decided to have it towed. Luckily I live close to work and took it back to my house. Once I took it to BMW, my service advisor thought it was a VANOS problem.

Come Friday evening I get a call from the advisor saying it was an extensive issue that was going to take a few more days, but it was all covered. Monday rolls around and it was ready to pick up, and I was shocked by what was in the writeup.

The tech started take the head apart, and found the rocker cover was cracked, with loose bolts on the exhaust VANOS and broken/missing bolts on the intake VANOS. He pulled the oil pan/filter and found the missing piece of bolts there, with aluminum particles...sounds healthy, right? Necessary repairs were completed and everything was sewn back up. Also along the way they found a faulty FRM and covered that as well.

Again, I just wanted to share my experience. My only concern now is if any fine pieces of the broken bolt made its way into the clearances of the rotating assembly and started scouring surfaces. It was driven for maybe 10 mins total after the problem originally manifested itself.

Cheers!

hmm... so a few days ago started to have a high pitched whine when starting the car that doesn't go away even when engine gets warmer, this morning it was a rattling type of sound that transformed into the whining sound afterwards, my garage appointment is next Thursday, getting worried when reading this

car runs great though

Yeah the "bolts" thing seemed odd to me, but I'll chock it up to a grammatical error. Admittedly my knowledge on these cars is limited, I keep myself pretty busy with reading flight manuals for work 😬

And mecbain it may be similar or something entirely different. When I would give it some revs the engine would smooth out but the whine would persist. It was at low revs/idle where the car would be incredibly unhappy.

my symptoms:
- rattling when really cold in the morning, that does go away as the engine warms up
- loud whine when cold that seemed to get better when engine got warmer, however since a few days that's not the case, the whine persists the whole way....
- engine is running great though... pulls like mofo, can't say I have idle problems either, I mean there's no variation on the rpm, but does seem a little bit rough, but could be in my mind, if the case it's really really small

that being said, I called the garage, they can't move the appointment, and I need my car, pretty much single dad with job more or less reachable by other means than car... so I guess I'll wait (try to work from home) and maybe the vanos or whatelse will explode in my face...

edit: Thinking of getting a beater for when this happens so not be left without car...

I would suspect serpentine belt/pulleys before the VANOS bolts - and it was a later E90 issue anyway, not an early one.

yeah you're probably right, the fact that the car runs strong and idle is stable is a good 5 sign I hope, no codes either, well some but none that could be related to this.
