Re-wrapping Leather on Steering Wheel?

Who here has done it? The leather on my sport steering wheel has definitely shown better days. Also I love the feel of the leather of newer BMW's. It seems they use more of a smooth leather so I've been looking at Leather Sewing kits on amazon and came across this one...

https://www.amazon.com/Black-Genuine.../dp/B00SE8ECW2

Look legit? Is it something that most anyone can do as long as you are patient? It looks like a easy task, as long as you follow the instructions, watch some tutorial videos and take your time.

I don't agree with it being an easy job unless your good at sewing. Someone on here did a DIY sport wheel and wrapped it with new leather and it looked like s**t.
Those Amazon reviews are great though! The picture of the finished wheel looks amazing. I'd go for it man if you have another car to drive during the project.

I can sew a button on a shirt but would never attempt a steering wheel.

Doesn't look too bad to me and the DYI was real fun.

I just did mine today. Ordered it Oct 25th and it arrived yesterday, decided to install today. I removed the steering wheel to install the cover took about 10 mins to remove the wheel and maybe 1.5 hours to stitch the cover on. Taking the wheel off definitely made it easy to stitch.

Finished product looks great! Feels really nice also I doubt you would ever know it wasn’t a factory wheel. My stitching came out pretty good on the very last stitch I broke a thread so had to tie it off in a weird way but it’s on the backside I’m pretty sure I’ll be the only one who ever knows it’s there. All in all definitely worth the $60

Did it on my non-sport wheel. It's not "hard" per se, BUT it is definitely time consuming to tuck and stitch the leather (mine was while installed on the car), and can definitely get frustrating (in case you're one who loses it easily, lol).

I did the rewrap on my E46 Touring that an M3 wheel. It came out 8/10. The quality of the materials is great. It’s definitely a great value if you are relatively handy. However on my E60 M5 and E91 I just preferred to have a professional knock them out.

Do any of you have the cold weather package with the heated steering wheel? Curious how this extra layer of leather would affect the heated wheel.

Just did mine last night with a cover from Mewant (via Amazon). I've done several Wheelskins covers over the years and I like them but they don't cover the base of the spokes and I wanted to try something a bit more refined looking.

It would have been far easier if I had removed the steering wheel. I tried - I read the DIYs, I watched the videos - but I could not get the air bag module to release and I worked at it so long that the rubber around the access holes was starting to tear. After an hour of fumbling and cursing, I gave up and just went ahead and stitched it up on the car.

Getting the stitching right on the back side of the spokes is really difficult with the wheel on the car - you really have to contort yourself into odd positions. It looks okay, but the left and bottom spokes don't line up quite right and the leather is loose. I did not use the double-sided tape other than on the back of the spokes where it does not tuck in (just lays across the back of the spoke).

I may redo it when I have more time - next week during Spring break (I'm a teacher so I have a full week of garage time coming) or maybe over the summer. I'm also wondering whether I want to add some color to the cockpit - from the pictures, everything looks very monochromatic, although that may have a lot to do with the early morning, diffused lighting (cloud cover so no sun). It is not quite so dark gray monochrome in real life.

Looks good. A nice looking option with the coloured stitching etc.

mind taking a picture of the back? I've been eyeing this but was concerned with how it fit on the back of the wheel. does it just lay there?

I think I could have made the backside edges more even if I had been able to take off the steering wheel. You have to really contort yourself to see these backside edges/flaps so they are not hard to live with. I may try something stronger than the double-sided tape they supply to hold down the corners, though.

Anybody that wants this done in the UK, can use Jack at Royal Steering Wheels.

Does that bother you when driving? I feel like that would annoy the shit out of me , knowing it’s there. The front looks good though.

I've done mine too, after about a month the stitching has started coming loose, and he's becoming irritating!
Maybe I just can't stitch

Further to Dean's comment above, can anyone else who had a wrap on for a while comment on the wear and durability?
Does the leather stay in place or has it shifted or twisted around the rim? Is the stitching OK? When cleaning, does the leather colour hold or wears off etc?

Thank you.

No info on durability yet, but it shouldn't shift or twist if installed properly. It comes with double stick tape to keep it secure and in place. Here's mine:
