Insurance Question - Accident

I was in an accident recently, and the body shop believes it will be a total loss.

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this stuff. I live in Texas.

How much damage usually has to be caused for it to be a total loss. The car is a 2007 335i coupe. I estimate the retail value of the vehicle to be no more than 24,000 if even. It's got 75000 miles on it.

I am just looking for some guidance as to what to expect.

they said if the damage is at least 1/2 or 3/4 of the cars total value. its totaled.

They will give you a check on what they think its worth. They will call you when their insurance agent looks at your car to talk about the money aspect.

if the car is totaled my previous insurance solicited a 3rd party to provide quotes for the same vehicle in the local area... with consideration of preventative maintenance paid for over the life of my ownership.

ppp

p.s. price paid by insurance was slightly above what i was hoping for.

Totalled, at least in Florida, is usually when damage is 75% - 80% of the cars value. Take note that Insurers routinely attempt to pay about 30% less than the retail value of the car when paying totalled value. Treat any offers by an insurance company as highly suspect. I would expect in Texas, as in most States, you are entitled to recover the retail value of the car plus taxes and licensing fees, so that you are put in the same position after the accident as you would have been before the accident. If the accident is NOT your fault, you should collect the value of your deductible from the other person's insurance company if your company is paying under your comprehnsive policy. If an insurer refuses to pay full value, consider a lawyer or small claims court. In Florida at least, the insurer, if it is your insurance company, pays for your attorney fees if you prevail in your lawsuit.

Long story short - my A4 was totaled by Audi of Austin. The damages came up to roughly 85% of the car's value. The insurance company should be transparent as to the criteria that they use to evaluate a total loss. Good luck with finding a replacement! Couldn't come at a better time if you're upgrading to LCI.

No need to create this thread really since one of these is posted everyday. Only your insurance adjuster can tell you if it is. You can always fight it, but that's that. You can't come on here without any pictures and ask for opinion and guidance.

Actually, he's allowed to...

Back in January of 2010 E90post gave out passes for something that happened. consequently he's using this pass now.

If you have good pictures, a good insurance company, and good claim filing skills and good coverage, you can expect a fair deal. Sorry about the accident and I’m glad no one was hurt. Things like these make me want to get a high coverage for my car and the AARP car insurance estimate calculator is allowing that at a reasonable premium.
