Just noticed today a really bad eggy smell from my car, not filled up or done anything different, just wondered if any one else had noticed this?

I do get a bad smell from the aircon, which has been addressed (badly) by the dealer, but this is definately the early 1990's egg smell produced by a cat, not the normal rank aircon smell

yeah i noticed it slightly too, always happens in the hot weather. bacteria or something building up in the aircon system in the hot weather making it smelly?
there is a can of stuff you can get in the car store that you set off while you turn your air con on and it recirculates it and cleans and refreshes the aircon system so it dont smell so bad |

you stick the air con on full and have it recirculate the air inside the car. press the button on the can to set it off, and the gasses in the can empty into the cabin over a few mins. keep the air con going for few mins more to circulate the gas from the can fully into the system where it rids the smellys. and thats it i think. job done.

I have noticed that farts linger longer in an e90 than any other car i have owned. Especially the diesels.
With a deisel however, you can remap it to more of a ham flavour. |

the eggy smell from washer fluid will be bacteria ridden washer fluid. I'd fill it up with neat washer additive, that might help to kill off the bacteria.
The smelly aircon, I had this quite abit on my 130i. I didn't run the car with the aircon always on, this then allowed the bacteria to gain a foothold, after that, all I tried utlimately failed. tried The aircon sprays, a clean out buy my BMW indy. In the end, running the aircon all the time is the only thing that helped the most. |

True. Saw it on the news the other day about legionnaire's disease from washer bottles with not enough concentration of washer fluid.

Eggy Smell Solution
Dear all,
The eggy smell is from the bacteria proliferating in your windscreen washer bottle. It's a black slime. In a few months (or sooner) it'll start to break off the walls of your tank, then it'll clog your filter and your washer jets will become weak or stop working altogether. The blocked washer jet conundrum is a right arse. It's nothing to do with bloody calcium carbonate. The black slime that clogs the extremely fine filter is MOULD! that's right, it's mildew. If you've got weak or blocked jets, you'll probably remember a point in the summer when your washer jet fluid smelled of rotten eggs, but you were to embarassed to post on here for a solution cos its plainly got a critical infestation of wankers who just bang on about "I'll wait till my next scheduled maintainence" and "only BMW fluid for me". Bollocks. If you were really as loaded as you make out, you'd be at dinner in Nobu after a lovely day posting on the Lamborghini forum, NOT bragging on here you f*ckwits! If you've got no helpful advice, spare us the trauma of having to read whatever it is you THINK you know about OEM windscreen wash, or indeed anything else! MOULD likes water, oxygen and warmth. Once it proliferates in your tank, you'll need to follow the instructions available on here to remove the wheel, the wheel arch liner and empty your tank completely. Throw all this water away, you'll see it's absolutely full of black slime that's been breaking off the walls of your tank and clogging the filter. Next, fill the tank with boiling water and any old washing up liquid. You'll need to agitate the tank +++ to get the mould off the walls of the tank. Next, pop out the washer pump, where it inserts into the tank, there is a rubber bung, pull this out and connected to it is a filter, It's a cylinder about 1cm long and 0.7 cm diameter. You'll need to soak it in boiling water and use a toothbrush to get all the crap out of it. Now you're mould free. Fill it up with any bloody windscreen washer you like, tap-water, distilled water, bloody any water will do for God's sake. However, in the Summer, don't leave the tank standing half empty, keep it brimmed, cause if there's water, OXYGEN and warmth, then you can bet your arse there'll be mould. Regards |
