As a Landy owner this brings tears to my eyes! If this monstrocity makes it to production, it will kill the Defender for good. Land Rover just don't get it, this isn't what Defender drivers want as a replacement - sure the current one has lots of faults, but it still sells. The reason is its a design icon, and it's replacement needs to look similar but modernised.
BMW did it with the Mini, it can't be that hard! They may as well start making a commercial version of the Freelander and Discovery and scrap the Defender completely. Still, at least the prices of existing Defenders will remain high!

Problem is the current defender doesn't sell!! plus they can't get them through accident and emissions tests - especially in the USA..
How many tdci defenders do you see driving about? Tiny numbers. They are hand built and hence cost a fortune by comparison to jap 4x4s like L200s etc. So landrover have a problem. But i agree the dc100 isn't the solution. I think a 100/110/130 inch wheelbase, coil sprung truck with a decent diesel engine and roomy (unusual for a defender) interior for a competitive price would sell well. Landrover are going too upmarket at the moment, an airsprung v8 defender is just a joke. A <£25k modern defender with a 2.7/3.0 tdv6 and terrain response would be interesting - Might buy one myself!
