csf oil cooler upgrade/ update

I have not seen anyone posting anything about the csf oil cooler upgrade so here go.
The csf oil cooler upgrade or for m3 cars its the dct upgrade. BMW uses the same location and cooler for both if you don't know. I can understand why this is not popular. Just from looking at the side-by-side pictures its not very different. The cost is about $599. but you can find it on eBay for $481 and a few days ago eBay had a 20% off everything sale which would have put the cost to $385 shipped. As you can see the core is denser and theirs 1 extra row, not too exciting I know.
I just went to Bimmerfest last week and did the autocross and saw my oil temps. go over 250 and got nervous. I have read that it can got up to 275 before limp mode starts, but I chose to stop and cool down before that happened. Just idling in traffic in socal It can go up to 250, so I thought this would be simple and easy way to improve the cooling.
I am thinking I can sell my old cooler for $100 so my cost would only be $300. (i got it for $400).
The install was pretty easy took about 2 hrs. I removed the passenger-side tire and wheel liner. Just removed my old one and installed the new one. Pretty straight forward.
I will check-in in a week or so and let you know how theirs any differences if any.

Good idea to install one of these. Can you report back with your new temps after installing the oil cooler?

I would recommend purchasing a vented hood (with vents toward the front of the hood) as well. Will really help reduce underhood temperatures and lower overall oil temps while improving aerodynamics and increasing radiator flow. It will be especially effective at keeping temps down if you remove the engine cover as well.

In for updated oil temps. My oil hits 250 no problem in traffic, and I'm always concerned.

Did you enable Sport cooling in MHD? My temps have stayed at or below 230 after I flashed that option.

Sitting in traffic will always cause the oil temps to rise, because theirs no air movement. The oil cooler does not has a fan unlike the radiator.
Yes a vented hood seems like a good idea for cooling. When my car is hot and I open the hood to let it cool, it only takes a few minutes to notice a change. Don't know if that happens on all cars.
In my hast to install the cooler, I forgot to pre fill the cooler before i installed it. My oil level dropped by a 1/8 after the oil thermostat 1st opened.

I never knew what the cooling settings did- I've got a manual, and assumed t changed something in sport mode. Been a while since I looked at the different MHD settings. I'll have to flash it and see what kind of difference it makes.

We've sold a few for this application. Glad someone made a review about it! Good luck with it.

Same here, night and day difference with sport mode engaged. Should go a long way to preventing premature oil breakdown.

Update: Its been over 100deg. in socal and it did not go over 240deg. on the dash On the freeway. I had 2 people in the car and the a/c on, I think it was 107 outside. I did not really push it to hard though. I think it would have been in the 250 range before, but hard to tell.
I'll update again later.

It was 107 outside and I was at 220 in heavy traffic. I’m on the stock 335is oil cooler.

MHD Sport Cooling mode and Redline 5w-30. I think you can go lower if you run MHD and a thicker oil. You should give it a shot to make very good use of your additional cooling capacity

Please post your feedback on track temps and oil.

I was seriously considering a N54 engine (either 135i or 335i) and plan/hoped to hit 400hp (engine) and kept bumping into people reporting constant limp mode/high oil temps, so i started looking at the higher maintenance E46 M3 instead.

I was considering upgrading the radiator and oil cooler, but some people reported they still hit limp mode and see 140+c oil temps on track (stock turbos and tuned).

Will be watching this thread.

This cooler is not going to help much at the track. You should look at the racing/ track area for more info. I am just trying a cheaper route then ER and Dinan coolers that I'm sure would work better.

It’s hard to believe that the management at bmw can sleep at night if they’ve sold an engine that is more maintenance intensive than the N54...

Recommended rod bearing changes on a frequently tracked E46 is 60,000-80,000 kms, Head gaskets go at around 120,009 Kms.

These two are unofficially considered "maintenance".

So its been a year since the install, and thought I would give a update.
I did the autocross again this year at bimmerfest and my temps stayed under 250f. About 4 months ago I installed a ftp low temp. oil t stat. too.
I did 8 runs and it never went over 250f. It was about 10degrees cooler then last year outside, but I also idled a lot more in between runs( dam Alpa Romero test drives)
My car stays at 220f on the freeway and has not gone over 250f in the course of the year.
I would buy it again. For $300 i feel that it has helped 10-15% with my oil cooling.
The FTP motorsports t stat. I would also recommend. For $30 it makes a noticeable difference in the temp.and very easy to install. The only downside is it takes a little longer to warm-up, and I'm in southern calif.

I like BMS and FTP products, but would not buy their thermostats. You want your oil temp to raise as quickly as possible.

Get a true inline thermostat.

the BMS stays open all the time. The FTP does not. It only takes about a mile or two longer then stock for the FTP t stat to get to 160f

The quality of your oil and interval change will reduce your temps even more. Even with my mods and high boost I hover around 210 (220 in traffic) or less driving on Florida hot heat. I use mutol 5w40 and change it every 5k miles and I dont even have an oil cooler!! Good oil, with short interval changes, is the best mod/protection you could ever do to help your engine and because of this I've never considered an oil cooler. Having a really efficient intercooler also helps just as much as the oil to keep the temps down.

Sorry to dig this old thread up fellas. Can someone please provide me with the part to this upgraded unit... ?

I have a 2011 335i with the N55 & oil-cooler. But this looks like a better unit. I'm assuming this is the oil-cooler for the DCT E90 M3 cars.
