e90 power mirror info

Hello guys. Looking for some information regarding the auto folding mirrors on an e90. I've read all of the forum posts about fixing the issue -- cleaning the contacts, folding/unfolding the mirrors manually and with the button, the software fix, and the rusty/crusty/seized spring. I've tried everything sans the software fix from the dealer but my mirror still folds forward toward the front of the car.

All of this being said, does anyone know the purpose of the sliding pin inside of the housing or how the mirror senses where it should stop? (I think) part of the black plastic piece (which accepts 4 screws attaching it to the housing) that the pin slides into broke off around the pin. Other than that everything seems ok with the mirror. There's a little bit of play before the mirror will "break free" but I wouldn't think that would interfere with the mirror finding the proper place.

TIA

Any idea how? From my research/looking it looks like the pin will move up or down but I don't see anything that the pin would hit or get resistance from.

Thanks!
