08 328i E92 Engine Knock
Background info:
I purchased the car with 7 miles this past August. The car has been flawless and has been a blast to drive. Right now I am at about 9000 miles. Incident: I started up the car this evening and noticed that there was a slight engine knocking sound. I figured it would just disapate after it warmed up. When it was warmed up I drove to the atm at the bank. As I pull up along side the wall and lower my windows, I was suprised how apparent the knocking noise was. I tapped the throttle a few times and the frequency of the knocks got faster. I will need to call up the dealer to have them check out my car. I am suprised to get engine knock so early on.

Yea they replaced the cylinder head with a revised design that has a bigger hole to allow for more oil to be pumped to the lifters.
What I don't understand is why this problem happens on the 08 and up models. The sound I was getting (ticking) sounds like this: Ticking Replacing the cylinder head is the last resort that BMW will use. There is a bleeding cycle first if that does not work then its the replacement of the lifters. After that you will then have to be persistent to get the head replaced. Hope its nothing too serious with your car. |

The Bleed procedure is about half a days job.
Lifter Replacement is probably a days worth. Cylinder head replacement is a 2 day job. Its not too bad, but the problem is trying to get that ticking sound to come up at the dealer That could take some time The ticking noise mostly comes up in cars that do not get driven long distances everyday. Short commutes does not give the engine enough time to circulate the oil up into the upper chambers of the engine where its needed to lubricate the lifters. |

I also told the dealer to keep the car overnight in case it didn't come up at that time. It is a little frustrating as the dealer will do nothing unless they hear the sound. |

It won't really harm your engine. In the long run, it can create some issues (when out of warranty). If the sound comes only once in a while, I would not worry about it too much. Drive the car a little hard here and there You got 4 years to get this fixed so enjoy your car for a bit.
