Front Plate Thoughts

Obviously the vast majority think that the plate up front looks like hell... but with that being illegal in most states, whats your thoughts on it on the dash board. Is it too much JDM for a Bimmer?? haha

A few thoughts:

Plate on dash is still illegal
Plate on dash is dangerous - do you really want a sharp piece of metal flying about in an accident?

and finally:

A plate on the dash signifies to law enforcement "I know it is illegal and I don't care."

Get your holder painted the color of the car, it helps a little. My local body shop charged me $60.

I think it depends on whether or not you drink moderately (or more) and drive.

If you do, wouldn't you hate to get pulled over for not having a front plate and then get busted for a DUI? Not having a front plate gives every cop a legal justification to pull you over.

If you don't drink, you could get an equipment violation, which isn't bad.

I'm keeping mine off. If I get hassled more than once I'll throw it on. I have the front plate mount in the trunk just for that occasion.

I told my dealership not to drill for my front plate. Been running since April without it. No cop has bothered me yet.

I'd take the chance without it. Looks so clean.

TX requires a front license plate. Been stopped once when I had my Acura TSX but got away with a warning. Several cars in TX don't sport the front plate. Personally, I think the front plate looks ugly and I made sure the dealership didn't drill any holes on my bumper. Fellow members on this message board can give you their opinions, but at the end of the day it is your call!

Well said. One more thought,
If the plate is where most people put them it will become a deadly flying object heading for your passengers head if the airbag is deployed.

I use the plate holder that mounts to the tow hook mounting hole from GoMini It aint pretty but is looks way better than the cheap plastic multi use crap that came with the car. The BMW front holder was designed to fit Japanese plates which are metric and slightly larger than USA plates.

Don't install it on the dash, that looks off.

If you can wait, we will have a solution for you that clips on to the lower center grill area so you can slide it on and off when you would like without drilling holes on the front of the bumper.

Required here, but my CA asked if I really wanted the front bumper drilled. I said "hell no" before he could finish the sentence. I'll take the chance and deal with the 'fix it' ticket if and when it happens.

Hate mine. Since the E90 is my daily driver (and I drive a LOT of miles, primarily highway) I decided to let the dealer install it this time. Couldn't believe those words were coming out of my mouth, but just can't be assed to deal with highway patrols for BS reasons.

How about shaving the bottom of the plate under the numbers & installing it on a euro license plate holder. It will look like a front Italian plate.

Required in my state - IL. Have never put it on any of my cars and in 10 years I have one ticket. My new car is arriving in the next couple of weeks and I don't plan on putting on the front plate again... With that said, it is up to you to take the risk. It is still illegal.
