335i Auto Issue

First post so be gentleMy cars a 2006 335i and I do really think things have moved on since my last car an immaculate 330d E46 again an Auto.

Thing is I'm really struggling with the what I'd describe as "unacceptable" behavior of the Auto Box when you on a trailing throttle or when you move off. I understand the issue I'm encountering doesn't only apply to the 335i but some other E90 Series vehicles equipped with the Auto Box.

What I'm finding is that when you pull away say from a set of lights or when entering a roundabout you get a kind of sticky throttle moment where you'll touch the throttle you'll get a delay and then you jerkily move off.

I'm fortunate enough to work fro A1BN in Stevenage one of Hertfordshire's leading Indy dealers and have had a Gear Box software update in recent days yet this has made little to no difference. My next step, time permitting would/will be looking at adaptive re sets re throttle to see if this cures things.

I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who has a N54 equipped 335i Auto that has or had before a cure come across the same annoying trait that really has for me taken the shine off the car...wouldn't of posted this if I'd of had a manual.

Thanks for reading

Steve

I had a e46 330cic and now a e90 335i with auto box and flappy paddles. Cant say i have noticed the issues you are describing but, i do drive mine mainly in manual mode. Is it possible this could be down to a ecu/mapping issue?

Mines a standard car Sparky68, I chose from experience to try the Gear Box software update as it really transformed my old re mapped E46 330d and as far as I could see so early on it felt Gear Boxish if you follow me.

Now having loaded the latest software to my car the symptoms are sadly still present meaning that I need to look perhaps elsewhere. Gearbox had no faults recorded pre/post update so I need to look further afield at perhaps updating ECU software and/or clearing adaptations to see if this helps matters.

The main issue for me at the moment stems from the fact that the car is mainly used for my commute which is a short journey often broken up by a fair bit of stop start traffic hence the problem as such is always close by.

Sounds like I'm not alone re auto issues http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=442633

No not that I've noticed just when pulling away its jerky(or has a sticky sensation)when you apply throttle which really came to a head this evening when my wife commented on it saying it was me and all I'd done is lightly apply the throttle.

Having driven hundreds of cars in the past(Spent 15 years selling them before I changed career) I've never encountered such a annoying issue, if it had been one of my demo cars it would be parked in a work bay by now.

well you can rule out boost leaks as it would not be in range then, maybe a throttle reset or take a look at the injectors/coil packs. anything showing up on a diagnostic?

Sparky nothing via diagnostic showing everything was 100% clear.

Tomorrow morning I'm going to before I set off to work try the throttle re set which I haven't tried before on a E9X series car though I;'ve done a good few on E39's and E46's I understand it's key in slot throttle to the floor for around half a minute or so then key out and wait for a minute or so before trying to see if this helps.

Hope it clears it up for you mate. As these cars get more advanced they seem harder to fix! bring back throttle bodies and a can of warm start i say

The torque and power comes quite "early" in the rev range and that's one of the characteristics of the n54.

Are you not confusing this with the "jerkiness" of the auto gearbox?

And as with all auto gearbox, you do get a slight delay. And it will NEVER be as responsive as a proper manual gearbox where you can control the clutch with your left foot and select the "right" gear.

I had the same problem on a Jaguar with the same box, got so bad I wrote a website about it.

What you are describing sounds similar variant 2 here :

http://www.thelurch.com/lurching_zf_transmission.htm

I have just recently commented on my box being a little snatchy after coming off a trailing throttle to my Dealer. Had the car from new (2006).

First move was to re-set any adaptations, but just had the entire system software updated to the latest version - now back to being silky smooth. Never been better. Really made a difference. Like a new car again

Wow thanks for posting.. I was aware that the gearbox was shared amongst others so interesting to read your findings and your comments re the fact that after a reset and various other things you've finally got the car you wanted re driving pleasure...

Thanks for posting really appreciate it.

Oh I will trust me. If it solves it for me it would be nice to have the info on hand should someone else come across the same issue in the future

Valid point but having driven a fair few re mapped 335d's and shed loads of other cars over the years this isn't me v the lack on instant response that you'll naturally see in a manual its more unique than that zltm something that I hope I'll get to the bottom of and post to help others but its a shame really as it is apart from this everything I hoped it would be.

I have a factory 2007 325i and at i have experienced this same problem as well, started about 3 months after i got the car. it was smooth as silk when i got it.

However i did disconnect the battery at some point to do some work and don't recall having it happened to me since (fingers crossed!)

Let us know if / when this is resolved for you.

Welcome to the forum steve.

AFAIK the old 'throttle presses' method of 'box adaptation resets went with the E46.

You HAVE to do it by OBD machine, but as you work at a top indy that should be a doddle.

I use the Bavarian Techinc OBD cable / software and that list all the adaptations individually for reset, but I know the autologic machine used by my indy (BMW GT1 machines too) only has a broad brush 'reset all adaptations' command which resets everything, not ideal, but I would try that first.

i quickly tried the key in an 30 second special just to see if it made a difference and I have to say it does seem better. I understand as you've rightly stated that a more focused option can be done via our AutoLogic machine(time permitting I will do this and report back)

But as of 6.30 this evening touch wood most of the jerkiness seems to been banished(which means now that I've said it it'll be back to haunt me tomorrow morning)

But thank you to everyone who kindly replied and once a more in depth update re reset has been carried out I will post what will hopefully be a nice update.

I have this exact same issue with my 2008 330d.
After taking the car into my local dealer for this problem on several occasions where they've carried out a oil flush and change, updated software and reset adaptions there was a significant improvement.
However this lasted for about 2months before the symptoms were back as before!
I too do a lot of town stop start driving and came to the conclusion that the gearbox is adapting to this type of driving and causing these symptoms!

I have now found if I do the throttle reset as you described (I know a lot of people say this does nothing but it most certainly makes a difference to my car) then drive the car fairly hard for a few journeys the problem then goes again until it re adapts to town driving.

Do you drive an LCI 330D ?

The pre-lci 330D used a different gearbox.

Might well be the case re the car sort of slips into a town mode... It will be something that I will keep an eye on.

But the simple key in and 30second throttle press so far seems to of worked rather well, but time will tell. I hacve access to the AutoLogic set up if needed but it would be nice if somehow from home with no equipment this issue can be controlled as it will if it works enable others who read this post with the same issue to stand a fighting chance of sorting their cars out in the future.
