I'm MSD81 as well but selecting MSD80 seemed to work fine for all the diagnostics options for my car. That might be the reason why it doesn't work with my car. I'm using 5.02 but have seen INPA 5.06 floating around.

I'm 95% sure this can be done via Autologic so it might be worth letting DW do it when the clutch and FW are done.

I asked Mike at DW if the idle could be done on Autologic, he said he wasn't sure, but next time they had a 335i he would try it!

Woohoo!

The flywheel & clutch has arrived, amazing how he got a clutch in checked hold luggage all the way back from the US through Heathrow (it looks remarkably like a landmine) and no one batted an eyelid!!

So no duty or vat!! Bonus.

Now to get it booked in at Darren Wood.....

Guys I fitted the Aluminium SMFW today with my HPF Clutch which looked in good condition when it came out.

The chatter wasn't too bad for the limited miles that I've done. Unfortunately there is a grating noise and vibration in 800-1700rpm in 2nd and 3rd which I've read in 3 other threads written by SMFW'd 335i owners.

So guys go for the Steel SMFW if you get the chance as I heard this avoids these issues. Didn't get a chance to feel the difference in how it revs as I was too pissed off with the vibrating. I thought I had f'd up the install but a quick search shows someone on here with the same issue:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=487514

However, the Spec clutches are sprung so maybe these issues aren't present. Anyway I'm probably going to change to a Spec Stage 3+ in the future.

How did your DMF look when it came out?

Fecked, had loads of play in it, in fact is was worse than the 10k-12k one I took out previously. Might be because I'm running much more power this time around. Also had to remove the pilot shaft so it was tossed into the scrap metal pile.

Idnan, how much load to get that vibe at low revs?

The other post talks abouts 'lugging' the motor at these revs, i.e. high load, which i tend to avoid. Does it still do it at 'family' speeds?

The release bearing that came with mine is damaged, so I'm waiting for a new one to be shipped for free.

It does it mainly when pootling about. Imagine dropping to 25mph in third and speeding up to 30-40mph and it vibrates. I find the noise to be worse than the actual vibration. Not sure where to go from here, spent 6 hours doing it yesterday (not too bad for a DIY) and it is probably worse than before.

Hmm. I hope mine doesn't do that. I'll be a bit miffed if it does.

What is making the noise do you think? Is it the transmission due to engine vibrations? or maybe the clutch plate now its a sprung plate rather than solid?

'Grating' sounds a bit grim

It's horrible tbh. Any more than 1/4 throttle up to 2300rpm it make a noise like the flywheel is scraping against something. Perfectly 'normal' from what I've heard from other reviews.

Spec had the following to say:

"not having the dual mass flywheel is the reason for most of your noise. The largest reduction in noise is going to our billet steel flywheel, which is heavier and designed to dampen the gear resonances. (I have the aluminum in my 335is and love it). So you will be better off (with a spec clutch), but it will not be quiet with tout the steel flywheel."

I have kinda learnt to drive it so the noise doesn't appear too much but the n54 engine pulls from so low you hardly ever how to downshift. It also makes a loud squeak when engaging the clutch in first and pulling off. Not sure if I'm going to go for a new clutch and flywheel (again sigh) from Spec to hopefully sort this out once and for all.

Will it settle down after the Break in period?

How does it feel otherwise?

Most reviews I've read rave about the Ali fw.

I drove mine to work today as the sun was out, and I must say i'm not a low-rev driver, at 25 in third mine's at 2000rpm, and I wouldn't normally drop below that, i'd blip to second if I went slower.

The guy at Spec also told me about having the ally setup in his 335is and how great it was...we'll see.

But Idnan's experiences don't bode well.

Booked in at Darren Wood on 22nd April. Unfortunately the new thrust bearing was damaged so I've got to wait for SPEC to ship a new one (its on its way).

Idnan - I've read about a press being required to get the old pilot bearing out of the DMFW and press it into the new one - is this right?

Would I be better to get a new pilot bearing? Is it item 5 here?

It is the pilot shaft that needs to be removed from the flywheel, the pilot bearing is actually held in the gearbox on our cars (a complete an utter arse to remove).
I heated it up and hammered it out and then used a punch to whack it in place. A press would've made the job much easier, and I have one at home but was working at a garage with lifts.

I'm waiting to hear your thoughts and will plan my next move when I see how yours goes.

Ok cool, we'll see how noisy mine is then......

I'm thinking of the possible cost implications of fitting it all (£150) then having to buy and fit a new one (£400+150) then being left with an Ally F/W that no one wants!

The joys of modding.

PS - Phil - where did you get your RB PCV valve from?

Rob Beck direct.. Was pretty cheap..

I fitted it at the same time as my Oil Catch Can.

Idnan - I just read your vibration post on bi##erb##st, I know you've mentioned it before on here too. (and Alpina_b3_lux)

Well yesterday I was doing some high gear pulls on the way home (took the A50 for a blast in the sun).

Mines slips wildly from 3k-4.5k as before it I give sharp throttle inputs, but if I let it settle with a bit less gas, then in 4th or 5th gently push towards WOT I get this really loud "brbrbrbrbrbrbrbr" vibration right through the car, it kind of resonates the whole body and you can really feel it. The car still accelerates, but it is really disconcerting.

Not high frequency, much slower than engine rpm, more like prop or wheel speed.

Maybe my DMF is shagged too as well as the clutch?

I have the same noise and vibration.

Most common when cruising in 6th under 2,000 rpm and go WOT.
