Normal operating Engine Temp and Coolant Temp?
Noob Question.
Ive been monitoring my temp gauge thru CarlyApp(yeah, i know its what i have for now) and i recently just did a coolant flush. I went out for a drive for about 20-30 mins to gather information on the Temps. Here is my Temp reading: Coolant temperature - 64c and it goes up to 72c, then back down to 62-64c driving around for 15 minutes and it never reaches 80c. Engine temperature - 93/96c consistent. Are those numbers normal? is my wpump and tstat going bad? or something else is wrong? any advice? (Cali, 70-80F temp) Thank you. |

I am not sure if you have seen my thread posted years ago about the same question, but mine also is weird as far as coolant temperatures goes. However, I was simply monitoring the coolant temperature via the hidden menu and not via something like Carly or so. So actually am wondering if my concerns were always slightly misguided and that the observed coolant temperatures were fine but more specifically the engine temperature is what should be shown. I would say rerun your test using Carly again, but with the hidden coolant temperature menu running to see if it correlates with what Carly is showing - those coolant temperatures that you say Carly shows are low and could point to a stuck thermostat.

Do you have an electric water pump? If so, the constant fluctuations in temperature are normal. And the reason why BMW stopped fitting water temp gagues, so not to confuse/panic customers.

The N52 has an intelligent heat management system that utilizes the electric water pump and t-stat. It varies the engine temperature based engine load demands and fuel consumption/emissions requirements using four (4) mapped temperature ranges: 112 deg. C in Eco mode, 105 deg. C Normal mode, 95 deg. C High mode, and 80 deg. C High (load) + mapped t-stat mode. These are cylinder head temperatures. So what you are observing is normal operation of the N52 cooling system.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Okay, I've known about the 4 different temperature maps for years now, but despite various DIY's including replacing the original and perfectly good aluminium thermostat for a new OEM plastic thermostat, fresh BMW coolant and distilled water, etc, when I check the hidden menu 7, I never see it run above 100 degrees to the eco mode, 99% of the time it's sitting either in the mapped high output mode, or slightly lower. And this is regardless of how the engine is being used. I don't live in severe climate, so outside temperatures are usually moderate. I wonder if the hidden menu 7 isn't always showing the same parameter from model to model. I remember checking this hidden menu 7 on a family member's 2009 X3 2.5Si which also has the N52, and it was showing the "correct" temperatures. I've made piece with the fact that this is just one of those quirks and am simply not willing to spend more time or money trying to get this thing to do what it clearly doesn't want to do...
