I'm not 100% sure but I think on pre lci E90's the tyre pressure is measured using the ABS sensor (wheel rotation).

Yes it is.

They do not use the standard rubber valves though they are metal stemmed variety and there are different types dependent upon the wheels you have fitted. The stems are longer or shorter.

Unless you have run the tyres flat on the rim, assuming non-run flat tyres, you will not need new valves but if the fitter insists get them to fit new inserts into the existing stem and save yourself £££'s.

As a matter of interest what tyres are you getting?
Not run flat I hope!

I think my 2010 E91 has got standard valves and not running run flats. Can't you turn off the tyre pressure monitor in the idrive?

If you already have the metal stem valves I would keep them but you can buy just the insert i.e. the needle and seal to screw into the existing metal stem. That way your new valves cost a couple of quid per wheel instead of £20 per wheel for the whole metal thing. A decent tyre fitter will know what is available. Of course, if you already have the rubber type valve the fitter will probably want to change them anyway.

If you have TPMS on your car why would you want to turn it off especially if you have low profile tyres? I have 255/30 on the rear and they always look flat even when I have just checked that the pressure is correct. TPMS is a really useful feature provided you remember to reset it each time you inflate your tyres which is what a lot of owners neglect to do and then complain about the constant low pressure warnings.

I wondered about this I have a 2010 e90 and just had the rear tires done . Run Flats but the valves where changed . Does this mean I no longer have the right valves ?

I can't get the car to error anyway even if I take air out the tyres and drive. New to BMW so any advise welcome .

You are the lucky one! Most people have the opposite problem with the dash pinging up tyre pressure warnings all the time.

Perhaps if you are new to the car the TPMS has been coded to "off" by the previous owner. You only need a drop of a couple of psi on one wheel for the warning to trigger.

One of the best mods you can do is ditch the run flats. These cars ride much better on "normal" tyres and the non-run flat rubber is cheaper too; bonus!

It depends what system you have on the car.

The majority of E9* cars I believe use the ABS to monitor and hence do not use metal valves/sensors inside the rim/tyre. So swapping tyres isn't an issue as they use standard valves.

If you have proper TPMS then you will have the metal valves and sensors in each wheel. Most tyre places will just not touch them or swap them out when changing tyres.

You do need to go into the idrive etc to reset the system when changing pressures or tyres.

Cool, but just check your pressures are correct all round and reset the system

When mine pings it is always close to 7 psi down.

That sounds high. Maybe that's why the tyres wear in the middle.

You should reset the system as it works on the rolling radius of the tyre which will have changed.
