Question: How error codes are stored

Intermittantly, I get an error code displayed that, after consultation of the owner's manual, I take to mean I have an interior lamp out. I conclude either the lamp is out intermittantly or the sensor -- whatever it is -- is bad.

So, I mention this issue as I get an oil change at BMW Fairfax. They end up saying they could not duplicate problem and thats all they do.

This brings me to my question -- aren't these errors logged? I could swear I saw a printout of all the codes my car had thrown (DTC off, etc) at another service appt for oil change. Anyone have an answer or similar experience? Its not a big deal but bad service -- correct me if I'm wrong -- annoys me to no end.
