Steering Wheel Sensor and Race Wheels

Hi Folks,

I am looking to replace my OEM steering wheel with either a Momo or a Sparco wheel on my E90. Naturally, I will need some sort of a hub adapter to make this work.

I know our cars come with steering wheel sensors. Is this sensor used just for turning off the turn signal after you straighten the wheel, or is there more to it?

Is the steering wheel sensor used in ESP or other modules around the car?

Without it all ABS and related brake functions as well as all stability control functions will not work, at all, including hill assist for 6MT cars. And, yes, turn signal canceling won't work either.

So is there a solution that allows me to run a race steering wheel and maintain the steering wheel sensor operational?

Sure, any one of them will work fine. The QD hub doesn't disable the steering angle sensor.

Thanks for the response. I guess I was mixing up the turn signal auto shut off with the steering angle sensor which sits behind the plastics on the steering column.

Turn signal canceling is dependent on the presence of the steering angle sensor.

Right. I thought so too since it's all electronic. I got confused because I was looking at the NRG short hub adaptor which fits E46 and E90. The product details of that hub say that the turn signal canceling function is lost with this adapter, but they are likely referring to when it is installed on an E46.

Thanks for the help! I appreciate it. I ordered Momo steering wheel, NRG hub and quick disconnect system.

Ok, so the NRG steering hub adapter does not fit with the steering angle sensor on an e90. It seems that it would work on an e46 though.

So right now, I remove the steering angle sensor and everything fits.

Can anyone share what brand and model are they using for steering hub adapter?

I see Momo has the 2013 model which supposedly works with e90 but it does not explain if the steering sensor is retained. Same for the OMP one.

Suggestions?

Krontec is a guarantee here and the best choice given its method of avoiding the slop that develops over time with other designs, especially splined types. If you use it don't forget the alignment sleeve, sold separately.

His OEM m3 steering wheel. My car is people hauler. I literally drive it every day. To work. To daycare. Groceries shopping. Yes, every few weeks to the track as well but still is daily driven car and racing steering wheel would be just wasteful overkill I guess.

So the NRG Hub adapter requires you to remove the steering angle sensor. So does the MOMO and the MOMO 2013 adapters as well.

The OMP one looks promising, but I can't tell from the pictures.

Does anyone know of a steering wheel hub adapter which allows you to continue using the steering angle sensor?

...or alternatively, how do you deal with the coding once the steering angle sensor is removed? I can't find anywhere how to decode it.

I had the momo non slim hub and it did indeed work with the clock spring.

The last large bolt you remove when removing your steering wheel is the only bolt that holds the adapter in place. You do nothing with the coil spring and the steering angle sensor so it should not even be affected. You will get an airbag light on when all is said and done.

Not sure if this would work on bmws, but on my last car I installed an omp wheel and momo hub, which also retained the clock spring. I was able to defeat the airbag light by using a resistor.

I don't have airbags or airbag module and I've coded that out.

I will give it a try on the MOMO A2013 hub to see how it will go.
