Windows 7 port values INPA
Has anyone succesfully installed and set Port values for using K Dcan cable using INPA with Windows 7 and how did you do it.?
It seems that windows 7 does not give you the option of selecting ports and individual configuration/value adjustments etc. It seems as though windows 7 ports are designed for plug and play and cannot be accessed in device manager, even if hidden items are displayed. Could someone please explain how to allocate port 1 and adjust latency to 1 as recommended in all the installation instructions I have read. Are port settings available once the K dcan is plugged in. I am on a tight budget and hoping to code in a replacement diesel injector on my 2006 e91 330d. I believe that I have installed INPA ok after going down a lot of blind alleys and hopefully my 'Mikes easy BMW tools' installation will work ok.? Thanks in advance for your advice. |

Every One has or this board wouldn't exist.
When you setup the Standard Tools suite it asks you for a port number that is the one use must use or setup in Window's . Most people use Port 1 . You cannot setup the port number or its sub setting without the cable plugged in. It does not have to plugged into the car to do this just the PC if you are setting up standard tools on. Bimmergeek.net download is recommended however I don't know how well that supports diesels. Not many have diesels on this board. I would go with Ista D for Service functions. Windows 7 forsure has port settings in device manager area. It'll be in control panel area. Make sure to have the cable plugged in first and let it stay plugged in for 5 minutes before you try finding it in device manager area as it takes older windows a while to install the drivers.

Windows 7 Device Manager
Specifically, Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, and then the top item is 'Devices and Printers', a sub-menu under that item shows a Device Manager link on the far right.

K Dcan success BUT !!!!!! Caution.
Firstly ,thanks to all for advice offered. MyK Dcan cable arrived today and yes it works ok. The device Must be plugged in first for windows 7 to discover it in Device manager. The drivers are then installed ( I downloaded them previously from FTDI) Patience is the name of the game as the drivers install.(as advised thks ) Port settings can then be configured.(Port 1 and latency etc) Checked INPA which recognised K Dcan ok and showed battery on. Did not connect to car at this stage.(I am in Wales and its raining ! ) Ended INPA and shut down laptop. Re started laptop with K Dcan plugged in and my laptop didnt like it and would not connect to the internet, thought I'd stuffed it! Laptop was doing nothing much so force closed it,unplugged cable and re booted, still no wi fi to my router. Re booted again and finally everything is ok. Phew.! My question ,following this scary moment is this. When closing INPA and returning laptop to normal function,do I unplug K Dcan first. On re start when INPA is required ,do I start windows normally and then add K Dcan or boot with K Dcan cable plugged in and configure from step 1 all over again. My conclusion is that by having the K Dcan plugged in and port adjustments made that my normal wi fi configuration is disabled . I am using this laptop daily and it is not dedicated to diagnostic use only. All advice welcome as always. . |

To summarise Laptop would only restore to normal function when re booted with K Dcan cable unplugged.
It looks like I have to go through the setup for K Dcan everytime I wish to use diagnostics as it seems to conflict with normal wi fi operation if left plugged in. Looks like its something to do with adjusting port settings when K Dcan is configured. Maybe windows 7 with virtual ports allocates port 1 to wi fi during normal use . |

I don't see how this could interfere with the Internet at all.
I have had this installed on three different laptops and never had any Interaction between any other parts of the computer. Once or twice if I didn't use these for awhile it would loose the latency one setting. Also every time I plugged in the cable the com port would show up right away no waiting. The only way I could see some Interference is if you use that Port for something else normally. Wi Fi and I/O should be totaly different hardware as far as I know. |

All working ok now, thanks guys for your support and advice.
Loaded everything on an old laptop (dell notebook 32 bit) and all was fine. Went back to my original laptop and all seems ok there now. Guess this old guy is losing his touch or just had some' button trouble' as we used to say in the good old days. Its wonderful that we can help each other and no longer be at the mercy of main agents ripping us off out of our hard earned. Cheers Guys |
