Engine Noise
Attached are videos of the noise. The car is a 2007 BMW 328xi with an n51 SULEV engine. The noise seems to be louder when closer to the intake manifold. Need help on this the sound is really bugging.

I won't be much help but I also have an 09' 328xi with the N51 and I do recognize the sound you have shown. I only hear it when I go in the engine bay or am outside of the car, not from the inside. It does come from the intake manifold area from my ears as well.
I've heard some people mention lifter tick (or whatever you call it) but this is different I believe. Imo I think it is something that you don't need to chase unless it really gets to you but it shouldn't be a mechanical issue (probably lol). I have heard however that people relate it to oil lubrication and the oil that is in the car. One thread I saw was someone mentioning an oil change decreased the noise so that could be something to try depending on how long it has been for you. |

It's hard to tell, but from my perspective, It's coming from the intake manifold. Get a mechanic stethoscope for $10 at harbor freight, check the pullies. Open the oil fil cap with the car running, does the sound amplify - PCV issue? If those are good, then check DISA valves. The large one is pretty easy to remove.

By the way the vehicle shifts very late. Also sometimes after maybe 100 miles the engine light comes on for P0015: Exhaust “B” Camshaft Position Timing – Over – Retarded (Bank 1). If that helps.

Sounds like loud(normal) lifter tick.
Do an oil change with an engine flush. You can add oil additive too if you want and it may quiet things down. |
