Is the BMW performance increase worth it?

Looking over the BMW site - the performance increase kit includes an additional radiator and some other stuff... I can't seem to find exactly what parts are included - I'm thinking these parts could probably be purchased for ebay and installed - which would probably help cool the engine since the performance increase obviously heats it up more than normal... so using these additional parts, plus a new FMIC, cold air intake, Cobb tuner should be 5x more power than the BMW increase for 1500 bucks?

What says you community?

Only the hardware maybe worth it on the PPK 2, but around here everyone thinks the PPK tune is garbage. The gains are too minimal for the price. PPK1 tune only gives you 20-25? cobb only will possibly give you 60+

I would skip it, unless you like your warranty(if you have one) intact. even so you can uninstall tune unlike the ppk. if you ever desire to do so. You might get badge also? cool badge lol

I had the PPK1 for about 3 months and switched to GIAC Stage II. Cobb or JB4 is probably what you want. You can buy a number of after market parts to match the PPK2 for better performance and/or lower price.

I think the power package kits they sell are way marked up because it's BMW selling it, and I'm pretty sure you get very minimal gains. Like other have said, it only makes sense if you are worried about your warranty.

I would go COBB. COBB gets you way more power and is still very safe. It is also a lot cheaper. You can uninstall is in minutes as well so your warranty should still be fine.

Buy a Cobb, unless you have a warranty you want to keep intact.
Even then a Cobb can be removed with no trace except an ECU reset.

I have a Cobb and remove the tune before service and warranty.
Never had a real issue. The only problem I have had is that if a SES light comes on I need to drive more for the fault to reappear because removing the tune clears the faults.

It’s a good options if your car is still under warranty and you want to keep it that way, or Dinan tune but that is stupid money...

As far as extra hardware isn’t really needed unless you track the car, my car doesn’t even have a factory oil cooler and I can push 500hp crank with 100 octane and meth and runs low 12’s on RTFs......on top of that I am using one step colder plugs that dump more heat from the combustion chamber into the motor the oil does get hot after repeated pulls...

$179 for a BT cable from BMS, Drop in K&N $80, Stage 1 or 2 Vishnu OTS as long as you have good fuel... I think you'll be very happy with your car if you don't want to do much more and it takes all of 1.5 min to flash the stock rom back. I just did a stage upgrade flash on a local car with a K&N drop in filter and the owner is running an e20 to e30 mix and the car is super quick. $ for $ you can't find a better cheaper solution.

How? Well who's software to apply Vishnu OTS values to the original ROM and save. I read the BT cable flash instructions and it reads like you just flash the provided ROMs as opposed to making a new ROM with OTS values applied to the stock ROM. If you can do it the OFT way (apply values to stock rom and make a new one) I'm going to do this NOW!

what what what. hahaha Sorry, long day...

1. buy the BT cable
2. Install BMS version 1.2 BB Flash
3. Backup your Stock Rom
4. with TunerPRO and Vishnu OTS, modify your stock bin and save it to disk.
5. Flash it back to your car and enjoy.

I'm afraid I don't have a clue about COBB, but just in case this information is helpful since the OP seems to have an '08 like ours:

DME gets changed from MSD80 to MSD81. (I have my old DME in a box.) This is only if you have MSD80 in the first place. I forget when the change from MSD80 to MSD81 was made.

After this work, my Bavarian Technic cable/software no longer works, but again, I know very little about COBB....

Some kind of bracket is mounted with the power steering reservoir. I have looked at it because I am kind of interested in the Injen intake, but I don't think it would fit with this little box and bracket there...

Why would you ever want to upgrade from an MSD80 to an MSD81?

It's a requirement to properly run the PPK with the PPK controller, and it's a faster ECU.

Just as BuraQ states, when you order one (by VIN) they will automatically give you an MSD81, (and when I was ordering it I remember it was about $100 more because of this.)

Hey guys, sorry for the delay in thanking everybody for the reply... I've been traveling and the site didn't notify me of the replies... in any event... I do have a Cobb already. I'm trying to figure out about ordering a FMIC - I just installed a AFE cold air intake (closed), and updated the car to the latest Alpin. D3 transmission update. The reason I was asking was more because these cars generate a ton of heat. my water pump went out recently and now I've got to change the T-stat and piping (as the BMW place wanted additional labor for those parts even though they were going to remove them anyway... but when I was at the dealer - the guys there were telling me for the upgrade, they add the extra radiator, and upgrade the cold air intake - they said it would significantly reduce the amount of heat buildup - which I want to call bullshit - but I'm not sure - I know the actual gains are not much at all - they claim 20 more hp - well so does this AFE - and all it does is make the car drink more gas (or drink faster). So that was more for the question - the Cobb makes a good performance increase - hopefully the FMIC will add additional value as well... Thx everybody...
