N54 Motor Mount Upgrade?

All,

I've been wondering if there is a need to upgrade the motor mounts on the N54. I know that the N54 is longitudinally mounted and any twisting that the motor exhibits will be on the same axis as the transmission, so controlling the amount of twist is not that important compared to a transversely mounted engines.

However, I still think that upgrading the motor mounts or at least the motor mount rubber bushings will reduce the twist of the engine, especially on FBO cars running high boost. Also, considering that the aftermarket downpipes eliminate the flex joints, I think reducing the engine twist will ultimately reduce the twisting forces at the turbo manifolds where the temperatures are really high.

I would think that upgrading items numbers 2 and 4 on this pic of realoem for N54 motor mounts will be helpful:

I think you will automatically affect the drive ability and comfort of the vehicle by doing so...

Let's remember this is a luxury car. When I upgraded the mounts on my MS3 which needed this done badly for fear of breaking stuff (mounts breaking and dropping the engine to break axles lol)... the ride became very uncomfortable, harsh and the car vibrated like crazy. I will say though, since it was a FWD platform, traction and handling certainly improved.

Quest,

Point taken!

However, do not forget that you are comparing a 4-banger transversly mounted to a straight 6 longitudinally mounted. The I-4 engines have some serious second order vibrations. Most of them have an intermediate shafts and/or massive vibration dampeners on the crank pulleys to help reduce the vibrations.

I hated the polyurethane motor mounts I put on my MK4 Jetta because they ended up transmitting a lot of those engine vibrations into the cabin. Very bad, especially when cold. But, on the upside, you could actually feel the torque being applied straight to the wheels instead of being "wasted" to twist the rubber mounts.

The N54 should be fairly "quiet" when it comes to vibrations compared to I-4 engines.

EDIT:
It looks like the 335is has a different part number ONLY for the right engine mount. The left one is the same. This makes me wonder what is the difference.

agree on there being more vibrations and think that is the last thing you need to change on this car......

That is exactly what I had, bought it used off some fool for $50 lol. It definitely improved handling and certainly traction but damn that car vibrated and was rough.

edit - to make things even funnier, on that platform it was or should have been your first mod, otherwise you would break it after a few launches, it was claimed that mazda used the same ones on the reguler 3 which had 1/2 the tq and hp

All very valid points, try it out and report back

I had a Jetta GLI 1.8T with ECS upgraded dogbone mounts.

It was the only way I could stop wheel hop and start to get traction. I don't miss the vibration.

No issues like that on this platform but I see your point about stress on exhaust and other components.

Race Motor mounts FTL. Made my last car feel like I was in a space shuttle taking off. (vibration and resonance like you wouldnt believe). If you need it and plan on accepting the negative effects go for it. Just remember that drivability and practicality normally go out the window.

N54 Motor Mount Upgrade?

No..why would u even consider this...its not as if there is notable deflection in the OEM motor mounts..even w the insane power levels being achieved thru these motors..

Ur efforts would be best directed on the deflection in the suspension bushings..namely the control arms and rear sub-frame bushings...my 2 cents.

What do you guys think about in terms of tranny mounts though for 6MTs...I have been thinking of adding these on my car to help minimize tranny twist during a pull that especially at the 1/4 often times causes a missed/grinding 1-2 shift...if you actually look at the shifter and do a hard 1st gear pull you can see the shifter move slightly to the side pushing it off center and with enough torque from the engine basically sets you up for failed shift..

is that what it is?!! i have given upon 1-2 shifts completely because of how bad that problem is in this car.

I have poly motor mounts on my E36 and they transmit a lot of vibration into the cabin on clutch-uptake and low RPM cruising. So the inline 6 isnt immune to it.Gotta pay to play I suppose.

The part numbers in RealOEM show that they are the same for the left mount and different on the right...

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the UUC tranny mounts will fit the E9xs. The black rubber mounts with the enforcer cups should transmit little to no vibration. I had them in a E36 and E46 M3 and have been thinking about getting them for my E90.

Cheers,
Rob
