335d Diesel exhaust fluid refill

I have to occasionally top off the DEF. I have used the $22 2L bottle from the dealer. Recently, I got a 2 1/2 Gal. jug from an online BMW supplier. It does not come with the screw-cap outlet though. I tried to cut one of my old bottle to use it as an screw-in funnel. But I found out there is a tube inside the bottle once I cut the bottom out. What do I do to adapt it to use as a funnel? Should I just ignor the tube and pour the DEF straight in while depressing the bottle-funnel down as if I was using the original bottle?

Please help.

just buy a funnel and transfer the fluid to a smaller container so you can hold the funnel with one hand and pour into it with the other.

You mean I don't need to wory about srewing it in and all that? Any funnel can be accepted? No special mechanism to open the inlet valve?

How often (miles) do you have to top it off?

Why not just drop by the dealer to top off DEF?

My first top off happened at after 9000 miles. But the second after 6000 miles. I have wait for the third to see how it is changing.

My dealer says the in betwwen service top off is not covered and it cost $22 each 2L. Last time I needed 4L. Getting the 6L jug at the online BMW parts only cost me $40 for the 2 1/2 Gal. Almost 1/3 the cost.

Didn't realize that. For some reason, i thought that it was like every 30K miles.

Guess it's a small price in the grand scheme.

You don't need to screw on the bottle. Buy using a funnel is awkward unless it has a long narrow spout. The receptor tubes are recessed so a short funnel won't fit and stay in the proper position.

In Atlanta, DEF is now available at local NAPA and Advance AutoParts store. At NAPA, the 2.5 gals DEF is $12. When it is time to refill, I will try to used a siphon to do the transfer instead of a funnel. I have this siphon:

I would not risk contaminating the exhaust fluid b4 putting it in.

Hi, I work with Air1 (a DEF manufacturer) which supplies DEF to the US. I just wanted to highlight if you use your own funnel (or any other DEF filling equipment)- use it only for DEF. Don't use one that's been used for oil, diesel, washer fluid etc. The system doesn't like contaminants, as they can cause a buildup and blockages.

there is a problem. You should be getting at least close to your oil change mileage from a fill

Yep the OP has a problem and I will guess that the dealer did not completely fill the tanks at his last oil change. There is no way that he should be getting less than 10k miles between fills.

On a side note I saw a Volvo big rig which had the SCR system and it was cool to see it not blow soot as it motored in rush hour traffic.

just spoke with someone at bmwna about this (someone smart). The 335d should always make the normal service interval by design(13-15k). The x5d MIGHT need an early top off if doing heavy towing

You can go to autozone or oreily's or whatever and get a gallon of DEF for like $6.

Call 'em as I see 'em. Sorry. A car should be: go to the gas station, get fuel, leave, repeat as necessary. Going to the dealer to get fuel so your car will run is a joke.
