If you were anywhere near the Austrian Alps tap water is probably melted snow anyway not the concoction of chemical additives and chalk that my tap water consists of!

All fixed now, seems BMW were being their ever useless self (Shytner Nottingham) and hadn't fitted one of the coolant hoses onto the Thermostat properly. A) it wasn't over the ribs and B) the spring clamp was loose, so it was simply pulling itself off over time. Managed to access it from the front with the I/C removed and re-fitted it (without draining the system thankfully) and stopped the leak. Re: coolant mix, i initially chucked 1.5L of BMW coolant in it, then yesterday put another 1.5L of de-ionised water in, so assuming that BMW managed to get the mix right, it should be ok now |

Interested in hearing your thoughts on these tyres and if there was any reason for not going Michelin (as that seems to be what most people head straight for!). Heard good things about the Eagle F1's and they cost less than the 4s.

Used them last summer and they had plenty of grip when pushed hard on the mountain roads.

No expenses other than fuel & some bmw coolant this month, although it appears I will be spending some money on it next month. When I pulled the car out of my garage this morning I noticed a little trail of fluid that had come from the front by the drivers side fog lamp & upon checking the coolant it was around 300ml low. So it's lost around a litre of coolant this month.
Its recently had a new water pump which I believe lives in the area of the leak or maybe the rads developed a leak. My first rad sprung a leak on the opposite bottom corner & that also took a while to notice. I will book it in with the guys at Bourne Performance on Monday. I could drop the wheel liner & have a look but not sure if I can be arsed, maybe I'll have a look tomorrow before it goes to the garage. No matter how well you look after your 35i something will break

I had a look from the top of the engine with a torch & it seems that the leak is either the rhs radiator side tank or its leaking from the lower hose connection as I can see where fluids been leaking from just below there but I couldn't get my hand in from the top to feel if the hose connection was wet.
I'll be a bit miffed if it is the rad as it was replaced in march 2016 @ 92,800 miles, cars done nearly 115,000 miles now. If it does turn out to be the radiator I've been looking at the CSF as they now do one for the auto which wasn't available in 2016, not sure if I can justify spending £675 on one though. Anyone running one of these? https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...scu4AyC63C_-bP

Just fuel & £540 vehicle tax for April
I dropped the car off with the garage that fitted the water pump for them to sort the coolant leak. When I went to pick it up I was told "The leaks been sorted & there's no charge" so that was a nice result. Although I don't know why there was a leak as only the receptionist was about when I collected the car.

My original pump failed at 65k, the replacement failed at 110k. It wouldn't be so bad if it was an inexpensive part to replace

Fun thread to read!
In my case, too much! Mainly because of my desire to mod it, partially because of one garage messing my VANOS wheels replacement badly! This year so far: - all the liquids in the engine - all gaskets - head rebuild - engine block skimming and measuring - crankshaft balancing and remanufacturing - crankshaft bearings - carankshaft gear - cylinder rings (1 set destroyed for testing) - fog lights - suspension arm rear - paint job - replacing CHRA on a nearly new TD04 turbos (1500 miles) due to above mentioned garage mishap - new HPFP Total £3500 But last year was more expensive with few new toys added and a lot of maintenance and modifications to accommodate new toys. List too long to type, but main things were: - TD04H big twins from TX Performance - custom air intake relocated to the left side of engine - custom stainless steel outlet - twin disk clutch with SMFW (1400NM) - 6 speed MT gearbox resealing - BimmerLife R8 Coils - new rims - F30 disk breake retrofit - new piston rings - new rod bearings - new water pump - new Bilstein Eibach suspension - major pain creating extra space in engine bay to accommodate big twins ... Total around £8500+ End result is a car I would not swap for anything new below £100k Last edited by lightmanek; 05-07-2019 at 06:25 PM.. |
