Exclamation My wife came home in transmission state M1 all the way with 130km/h

She said our dog must have moved the transmission from D to M and she only realized when tried to put it into P. She was driving home 130km/h.

My question is can it be possible that the transmission never had my wife to do such a mistake and put the gears according to her speed or she really drove the car in first gear all the way home?

In my experience, the car is smart enough to automatically upshift/downshift to prevent any damage in manual mode.

I think she may have assumed she was in M1 the whole time because as she went to put in park, she was already at a stop, so the transmissions would have automatically downshifted into M1 if she hadnt done so manually.

The automatic knows not to kill itself.

It would have shifted normally after no input like most cars on the road today. 130km/h is not possible in first gear, it tops out around 60km/h (on my manual anyways). If it was a manual transmission the car would have killed itself by demanding more rpms than are available and then dieing forever shortly after.

It’s designed to be idiot proof, meaning it’s designed to not let you hurt it. If it gets bumped to M it goes to the gear it’s supposed to be in. If it you don’t manually select the right gear then it is supposed to change gears for you. If she would’ve damaged the tranny mostly likely she wouldn’t have made it home and she would’ve known about a lot sooner. Cheers.

When the shifter is moved to the left, you go into sport mode, which just means most shifts occur at 3000 rpm, instead of normal mode which is 2000 rpm.

That said, if she was in M1, the engine would have been screaming, and she would have known something was wrong. Also, and as was said, you can't go 130 kmh (80 mph) in M1. Being in sport mode is something you might not notice. I would notice, but she might not notice.

There is no way she drove it home in first gear, it isn't possible, don't worry about it.

I don't own a automatic e90, but from what I saw on 2 pedals bmw, the selector pushed on the left put the transmission in S ''sport'' ,, and it will be on M only if steering paddles are pushed.

'S' is basically automatic, but with later shifts, and 1 gear down.

Even on M, the transmission will shift @ near cutoff, unless its tuned to not do so.

Also, pretty sure 1st gear wont reach 130...

Is it the same with E90s?

She wasn't in M1 the whole way home. She was in S (Sport) the for the entire drive. Then, when she stopped in the driveway and went to move the shifter forward into park, she actually moved the shifter from S to "downshift" (-) which put it in M1

You could literally drive that way everywhere for the entire life of the car and the biggest issue you would have is decreased fuel mileage.

Thank all of you. Meanwhile I took the car for a ride and I feel absolutely nothing wrong so it doesn't let you blow the engine or anything else.

From what I’ve seen on my car, in DS mode it still shifts for you. Once you move the paddles or gear selector to m1/m2 it stops shifting for you...?

I thought failsafe would shift it into higher gear even in manual shift mode.

Maybe take it out and try it in 1st and 2nd gear?

It might just be bouncing off the rev limit in Sport, Manual and D:

Anyone willing to experiment in 1st and 2nd and take it to the rev limit?
