Hey all,

Anyone know where I can purchase 0W-40 Synthetic BMW LL-01 oil in the GTA for under $100?

TIA

Canadian tire, Belgian Castrol. Wait for it to go on sale. It's regularly 35%-55% discounted.

Not LL01.

Get the Pennzoil 5W40 Euro at CTC which is LL-01, and is nearly the same viscosity as the Castrol 0W40. Was on sale for $27 recently, and there is a $10/jug rebate from Pennzoil till the end of the year, up to 4 jugs.

Another option is Motul 0W40 on Amazon. It is actually thicker at cold temps than the Pennzoil 5W40, but has a lower pour point.

Not sure if I I understand the codes / terminology correctly, but on this site it says BMW Long life 01:

Must be an old document. Castrol 0W40 dropped (or lost) the LL-01 certification earlier this year.

I, and many others have switched brands. I switched to the Pennzoil 5W40 for both my cars. It now also has the SN+ rating which prevents LSPI in direct injection, turbo cars.

May I ask why do you possibly need the 0W rating?

Wanted to give it a shot this winter to see how it ran in winter temps, but the Pennzoil 5W-40 recommendation above seems more than adequate. I found Castrol's 5W-40 formula inadequate for reaching operating temperature in an appropriate amount of time.

What does the oil have to do with how fast it reaches operating temp?

Sorry, I was also concerned with the oil being too thick in cold temps so I wanted a "thinner" oil that would properly lubricate the internals. After speaking with my mechanic he said stick with 5W-40. This was a personal question of mine in the OP that I have since clarified. 5W-40 will be going in on my next oil change.

FYI thicker oil reaches operating temp quicker than thinner oil. But anyways you only truly need 0W in temps of like -50c or colder. I also was like you and really wanted 0W only for our cold -30c winters but 5W-40 is fine as well.

Good info, I had no idea (don't tend to keep up to date on these things). I must have 25L of this stuff in my garage!

I guess you backed up the car and loaded up with 12 jugs of Pennzoil! I agree that it looks like a good oil as I started to buy it too. However, if you browse the Pennzoil Q&A page, they do state that it only has a shelf life of a couple of years; I believe this has to do with its natural gas base stock. In comparison, I did read recently on the Blackstone website about 50y old conventional oil that was stored in a garage and still tested out good in VOA testing. Just a FYI

That is enough oil to last me a year for my cars. Good to go!

I have a plug for Motul 8100 X Cess 5W40 in Markham for a good price if interested. It's what I use in my car and is arguably the best LL01 IMO. I don't think they have the 0w40 tho.

Hahhaa damn yeah, the cold just hit us like a ton of bricks. Car ran and started fine though, but I did let it idle a bit in the driveaway for 3-4 minutes so I didn't freeze

I wish I got in here sooner... I wouldn't put that Pennzoil in my car even if it states its BMW approved, but that's just me. I have always done OEM or euro Castrol (usually sold in 1L jugs at crappy tires and you really have to look for it) I have 240k on my car and other then 1 Vanos I had to replace (I replaced both just because) my car has been amazing to me. I even sent my oil away a little while ago and everything came back amazing.

I recently I have switched to MOTUL 8100 X-CESS and I can honestly say I will NEVER go back to anything else. With OEM I used to have to put a liter in before the oil change time, not with MOTUL....this stuff is magic.

It goes on sale every once at Germanparts.ca and a while (just went on sale for 25%, and I'm sure for boxing day coming up as well)

Castrol Edge is still LL-01 and runs amazing, I have zero lifter oil compared to whatever the PO was running and zero oil burning. Made In Canada Castrol on sale at Cdn Tire for $30 for 5L, can't beat that.
