Transfer case died on me. Can I replace it with a used on?

Have a 2011 335i xdrive. The gears inside my transfer case are broken. And I need a new transfer case module. Actuator is fine. Can I use a a used transfer case on my car? BMW sales advisor says I cannot use a used transfer case because the module needs to be reprogrammed to the specific car and VIN? Local lesser known foreign car repair shop says I CAN use a used transfer case and that it won't need to be reprogrammed. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

The stealer is full of sh!t. Keep your existing module & actuator motor, reset adaptations, have a nice day.

a USED one will work, if the module is in fact VIN restricted, usually dealers wont re-program, but most indy shops with a good scan tool will be able to re-program the module for you.

I had a local transmission shop replace mine with a used one for $2k total. BMW wanted something over $5k I think. No issues.

You can buy a used one with low miles but you MUST replace the fluid with proper fluid for the ATC300 clutch pack in there. Most die because they believed BMW "life time fluid" lie.
$300 for clutch pack.

You can also make the shop replace the inner clutch clutch pack, bearings, and the worm gear on the motor. All under $500 for parts

Hey, I know this is an older thread but I'm trying to find someplace to purchase a clutch pack for my '06 325xi transfer case. The eBay link you have is not working (and I'm assuming it wouldn't be correct for my car). Wondering if you could point me to the right place? I have tried searching eBay but I'm not coming up with anything. Probably just not searching for the right thing.

Thank you!

www.car-part.com

Just get a whole transfer case.

My e91 325xi has a T-case out of a 5 series. I think it was about $200 and the salvage yard removed the donor unit from the old car.

Ships from Solvakia. Buy before Putin invades. Most Bimmer parts used and new come from there. I think OE parts factory is there.

Thanks for the links! I am thinking about just going with the junk yard replacement but I am torn because if I get the junk yard replacement, it could die as well. If I rebuild mine, at least I know what I have... This is me... OVERANALYZE...

Get a low milage junkyard unit.

Mine had 280k before I replaced it, and it worked perfectly except that the front output yoke was damaged by severely worn driveshaft Ujoints the previous owner left on.

Anything under 100k will do. It'll still be good and now that you're taking care of fluid yourself it'll go at least another 200k.

Upgrade that 325 into 330 intake and tune, also available from X3,X5, 5 series, and Z4.
