75w140 in 335d differential
Recently started hearing a light howl from my rear end between 60-100km/h under partial load. Goes away under full load or while coasting.
I am planning to change the diff fluid to see if that helps me zero in on where the sound is coming from. I have 2 bottles of redline 75w140 left over from another job, and plan to use this is my open differential. I know spec is 75w90. Will this cause any damage or ill effects running a heavier weight oil? Aside from any slight mileage decrease. I realize this won't fix a bad differential, mostly trying to isolate the noise for diagnostics. Car is at 86,000km with original diff fluid. |

I'm suspecting the same. The noise was only evident after installing M3 subframe bushings. So either it was always there and is only noticeable now with solid rubber bushings, or I damaged the center support bearing when lowering the subframe to install the bushings. Driveshaft was left attached for the work. Angle may have been too great for the rubber isolator. That's my suspicion at least if there is no change in diff noise with heavier fluid.
