No bms cowl filters. Just oem cowl and cabin filter.
reading that the water may get in from the bottom instead of the top, so check your drain filter next to then bonnet struts often.
well after ecu is dried and after using contact cleaner with a soft toothbrush on effected area i plugged the ecu back in. Still no dice.
Fuse check would be next. I see big red fuse in the dme box, appears to be intact.
Would anyone know which fuses to check in the glovebox compartment?
Tested a few fuses using multi meter on 20v and grounded the negative. There are a 3 fuses with thr check engine engine symbol and there are no reading on all three. Wonder if ignition needs to be on.
If anyone knows the fuses to check which are responsible for dme connectivity in the glove compartment and dme box pls let me know.
Thanks in advance.

You should test the fuses by pulling them and seeing if they've been burnt out (theyre transparent and can see if theyre broken) or measuring the continuity across them with a multimeter.

Yes have been pulling out fuses with the check engine symbol and also (ECM) labelled fuses as per fuse diagram plus whats on the Bentley manual.
Found the fuel pump fuse labelled F70, once i pulled that the pump shut off at ignition, good that means I'm using the right diagram from Bentley.
Also did a continuity test while the fuse is out to be extra certain.
The DME Relay is what escapes me at the moment, i wonder if it's inbuilt in the fuse panel. Can't seem to locate it on the fuse diagram or ecu plastic box.

What is that black thing to the left of the 50A fuse and the exposed connector in the picture of the DME box you posted??

Did you test the MOSFET when you had the DME opened?

The black relay fuse in the dme box appears to be for the electric cooling fan cut off relay (DME fan).

Mosfets looks to be ok, left and right pins didn't trigger beeps (beeps = continuity) when i tested. The middle pin would beep and this is normal apparently. These are the Mosfets for the 6 injectors.
Interesting enough though that the front non injector mosfet registered beeps for the left and right pins. (? on the photo).

Looking more and more like i need a 2nd hand DME here.

MSD80 seems to be plenty around with the exact part number 5WK xxxxxx
MSD81 with the stronger mosfets seems to be rare.

Not sure how ISN, VIN and CAS will interact with the 2nd hand MSD80/81.

Should i stick with an MSD80 and reuse my old CAS? then find someone that can "merry" off the CAS to the new MSD80 using my existing vin?
seems to be the most economical approach.

Thought of the Junction Box or JBE which runs off the fuse panel as another culprit; but would central locking/lights/comfort access still work if the JBE was at fault?

I would also remove all the JB4 wiring harness to eliminate any introduced points of failure.

K3000 appears to be on the opposite side of the fuse panel.

To cleanly remove the jb4 harness does the wiring connector disconnect if i push left? Seems to be arrow on each black connector.

If the dme relay is bust would the presumptions be that there would be no power to the ecu harness?
I found the B+ pin which is part of the smaller dme harness connector (pin1 circled on photo) and reads 12v when the ignition is on. Red probe to where pin one goes into female connector and black probe to strut brace bolt (ground)

At this stage looks like the dme is the culprit. Ordered an msd80 off a 535i in the US with the same product number as the current msd80. Found someone in melb that could clone or at least sync the dme to the current cas. Will also grab my injector part numbers since these will neeed to be programmed into the "new" dme from what I've been reading.
Here's to a lot more days of waiting.

Just called Liam.
Unfortunately not, DME CAS VIN and ISN sync ain't his thing yet.

Hey Mayuri, what's the DME issue with yours? Guessing that autoclassics quote would have been somewhere in the $2000-2500 mark.

Mhd scan shows up error 30BB, internal dme error, meanwhile car is running on like 3 cylinders. Looks like it's the infamous mosfet issues on the msd80...

update: 2nd hand 535i DME, old DME, CAS3 and key have all arrived in NSW to get the VIN entered and ISN synced with the CAS3 unit.
Fingers crossed the car is back on the road by next weekend.

Apparently I will still have to code my injectors back in using INPA when I get the DME back so their bench flashing tool must not have the ability for INPA or tools32.

how did you go with testing the mosfets with the multimeter?

If your cars an auto or DCT the EGS (transmision ecu) will need the ISN changed too

From the various youtube videos, you just test for continuity with a multimeter and it should read a negative for the 2 side points on each mosfet and positive for the center. If they read postive for any of the side pins, then that mosfet is busted and need to be changed.

My ebay multimeter ($10 ebay speical) hasn't arrived yet 😂, and somewhat too chicken right now to pry into the dme area in fear of my stubby hands breaking wiries and shit... lol

In the meantime i did some work on my R33 that's more appropriate for my (lack of) DIY skill; removing and resealing some water leaks in the boot and doing some rust removal 🤐

yes i believe the ISN is getting changed too, they claim that ISN is not 'reusable'.
oh oh does it mean that i need to send them the transmission ecu too?
Sent across was the new DME, CAS3 and comfort access key.

You cannot rewrite the ISN in the MSD80/MSD81, as they use an Infineon Tricore ECU, where the ISN is stored in a write once area of memory. The CAS uses an ancient series of Motorola CPUs, so you can just read and write the entire memory with many tools available off ebay/aliexpress. Typically the ISN from the donor DME will need to be written into your CAS, and your EGS will need to have the ISN written into it as well, otherwise the car will start but not go into gear. Not sure if this is achievable by just flashing it with ISTA/P or WinKFP, never had to do it myself.

EDIT:

Just spoke to someone who replaced the entire transmission from a donor car including new TCU it still works so might not apply to n54 and 6hp (this was on a N54 135i with dodgy transmission)

Autohex, Explorer or Magic can all write ISN from OBD or bench.
All that is required is a donor DME.

That's a relief! So the new donor TCU still works with old DME. Thanks for asking your mate VTL.

Have also removed the JB4 harness in anticipation of the arrival of the new DME.

Things left to do now is to find out how the valve on the DME box works by removing it from the car and pouring some water in and underneath the box.
Also considering drilling two holes in the chassis under the DME box to help drain out any fluids. The plastic wheel arch guards should prevent water from coming in under the car.
DME will also be engine gasket sealed too!
