N54 Average Coolant Temp

Anyone know what the coolant temp range the n54 runs in? When does the thermostat open? When does the fan turn on? On may home I was averaging 99-108 C. This seems pretty high! I was expecting 80-90 C.

Thanks

Average: 210-220 F

I think after 220 fans might turn on, not sure on that part.

I regularly see my coolant temperatures around 200-210 degrees fahrenheit.

I can view it via my P3 boost gauge.

Through holding down the odo and accessing menu #7. First you must goto menu 1.1 and add all the numbers together, then goto menu #19 and enter the number you just calculated to unlock the menu.

Sorry for detail, on iPhone app.

Wait is this different than the engine oil temp? What does the water coolant cool?

Wow really? Oil does have cooling abilities, but primarily it's the coolants job to cool the engine. The oil's priority is lubrication.

That's not exactly correct - oil temp should be kept in check to ensure proper viscosity. Too cold or too hot is bad. The coolant system cools the block and head, and oil to a lesser extent cools the reciprocating mass in the block, i.e. crank, pistons, rods, etc. Plenty of engines (lower HP engines) run fine on track without oil coolers even in race applications. If the temp doesn't exceed 240F, you don't really need an oil cooler.

Our engines, however, put out gobs of power for their size, and you need augmented water and oil cooling to prevent limp mode (which in turn prevents major failures) under track conditions.

My oil temperature is usually between 230-240 in daily driving conditions, but can hit 250 when driving aggressively. Are those temperatures okay?

anyone know of a way to make the thermostat open earlier? It is electronic? So one could change the temperature at which it opens.

Yes, you may be able to open the thermostat earlier but it will set codes. The ECU closely controls the coolant temp and doesn't like seeing unusually low temps. It can also slow the water pump until the engine is up to temp. It's a magnesium and aluminum block, who is to say that 97C is too hot? The engine definitely gets too hot under hard driving and track use, especially with 50-100 extra HP, but opening the thermostat earlier does absolutely no good for that.

Well with a the Tstat opening earlier and the fan running (jb4 maxcool feature), you could avoid these high temps. At 115c the car goes into limp I believe, and just in traffic on a cool day I see 108C. Just seemed high to me...

My oil temps are right around 240 and i have not seen it rise above 250, but then again i have not beat on it at all. I only do a couple hard pulls in a row here and there. One thing i did notice is that it takes a while to get the temp up, does not hit 160 until about after 10 min of driving. Anyone else experience the same?

At 108C the thermostat is already wide open. It's open at 97C. To cool any better, you'd have to run the water pump faster and shed more heat from the radiator.

Wow. That's pretty weak. My n52 consistently ran 80-100C, typically on the lower side.

They have the same thermostat, maybe your car has an obstruction, weak pump, or something else causing those high temps? Are you driving the 335 harder? Or the MSD81 just wants to run that hot? It's definitely interesting...

The little bit i've watched coolant temps i have noticed:
- generally 90 to 95c while driving
- 108ish idle (ac off)
- 95 ish idle (ac on)

i haven't watched it much, but never saw higher than 95ish when moving
