Need help! Engine light came on randomly

Hey guys , new to bmw world just got my 08 335i recently . Good maintenance records etc, all stock besides dci.

Today I got on the highway, brought her up to 6500r in 3rd and than the engine light came on (service engine soon) and power seemed to cut and it was running odd. I pulled over, turned off checked under hood all seemed good, restarted and no more engine light , running perfect again.

I use 93 octane , and have pushed her hard before with no issues.

What could it be ? (Ya ya I know scan it, waiting ok binnergreks cable to come though)

Thanks for ideas!!

Codes? If this forum doesn't have code numbers, then we can't really help you 100%.

I'd say it's Vanos Solenoids. You need to clean them.

You probably need to do an engine oil flush in addition to cleaning and swapping your Vanos Solenoids, but again no codes, I really don't know for sure.

+1 on codes.it could also be misfires, boost under target, etc etc

Dude really you are gonna tell him to flush vanos seriously that's not cool don't make someone waste hard earned money on wild goose chase especially on these cars. First guess would always be coil if running funny cause could have cut cylinder but could be cam ledges for all we know usually bigger problems would be half engine light but not right to assume with others money.

Yeah defo need codes. A code for the 1 or 2 of the Vanos might show. Failing that it should show a misfire code for a particular cylinder....or multiple. If so. Swap coils to eliminate coil issue.... if that doesn't help.... Change the plugs. Failing that it's probably an injector.

Stopped by Napa and used their code reader ( waiting on bimmergeeks cable and otg so I can install mhd) Codes that came up:

P112D
P166F
P0306
P0304
P0300
P112D ( this showed up first, and last when going through the codes for some reason?)

Any input on this? Coils and plugs possibly?

Exactly. Try coils and spark plugs on cyl 4 and 6 (codes p0304 and p0306). The code for o2 sensor might be because cyl 4 and 6 are misfiring. Put these coils and spark plugs on cyl 1, 2 and 3. Spread them around amount cyl 1, 2 and 3. If codes follow you found your problem. If codes don't follow then is something else like injector, o2 sensor, clogged up catalyst, vacuum leak. Definitely not Vanos solenoids 😆

Well its getting worse, in the morning, or when I go to leave work at the end of the day the car runs / misfires really rough. this morning it shook really bad and than got limp mode and the half engine light. Only codes the reader pulled are cyl 4-6 misfire, random misfire, and p112d for the bank 2 sensor 1 02 sensor.

Think this could be as simple as replacing that 02 sensor? Or is there something else going on?

This! I've had misfire codes come up for a number of different reasons and this is the best way to start diagnosing.

It sounds like the O2 but replacing those Pre-cat sensors are a pain. Plus they aren't exactly cheap so I would want to be sure. Does it feel better after it gets up to temp?

That’s what started happening when my buddy’s O2 sensor needed replacement. His cold starts were bad but it got better one it warmed up. Maybe check all the connections.

Checked connections today after work, also ran to auto store and read codes again and there was a new code for that same 02 sensor (don’t recall the code) but yea sounding like that might be the issue

(And misfire codes for cyl 4-6)

This is just the bank 2 sensor 1 than correct? Or could it be somethin else?!
